Who was imprisoned in the Grimhold?
In the early 8th century, the legendary wizard Merlin entrusted three apprentices with vital knowledge: Balthazar Blake, Veronica Gorloisen, and Maxim Horvath. Unfortunately, Horvath’s betrayal was profound, as he formed a treacherous alliance with the dark sorceress Morgana le Fay. In a brutal confrontation, Morgana gravely injured Merlin, prompting Veronica to act decisively by absorbing Morgana’s essence into herself. To protect the realm from Morgana’s destructive ambitions, Balthazar imprisoned both women in the “Grimhold,” a mystical prison cleverly disguised as a nesting doll. In his dying moments, Merlin entrusted his dragon figurine to Balthazar, an artifact that held the power to identify the Prime Merlinean—Merlin’s descendant and the only one capable of defeating Morgana.
As the years passed, Balthazar remained steadfast in his mission to find his descendant, capturing Morganians—those sorcerers striving to release Morgana—from their prisons, including the betrayor Horvath. The story fast-forwards to 2000 in New York City, where a young boy named Dave Stutler stumbled into Balthazar’s antique store. Upon demonstrating Merlin’s dragon figurine, which magically came to life, it revealed his lineage as the Prime Merlinean. However, things took a disastrous turn when Dave accidentally opened the Grimhold, liberating Horvath into the world. A fierce confrontation ensued, resulting in both Balthazar and Horvath being trapped within an ancient Chinese urn under a ten-year curse.
As the decade passed, Dave blossomed into a physics student at New York University. When the curse was finally broken, both Horvath and Balthazar were set free, leading to an intense pursuit by Horvath, who aimed to reclaim the Grimhold. In a twist of fate, Balthazar rescued Dave from a dire situation on the back of an animated steel eagle that originated from a Chrysler Building gargoyle. Initially unwilling to partner with Balthazar due to past traumas, Dave came to trust him after Balthazar promised to leave once the Grimhold was recovered. They tracked down the Grimhold to Chinatown, where Horvath had awakened Sun Lok, another Morganian. In a fierce battle, Dave triumphed over Sun Lok, allowing Balthazar to reclaim the Grimhold. As he tapped into his lineage, Dave found himself falling for his childhood crush, Becky, amidst Balthazar’s cautious disapproval.
As Horvath conspired to regain the Grimhold, he allied with the flashy Morganian magician Drake Stone to eliminate Dave. But their plot faltered thanks to Balthazar’s intervention. With Horvath’s manipulative tactics at play, Dave demanded clarity regarding Balthazar’s true motives and their dangerous path. Balthazar revealed the shocking truth—that Morgana was still trapped in the Grimhold alongside Veronica. This disclosure unveiled a dire prophecy: if released, Morgana would harness a powerful spell known as “The Rising,” capable of resurrecting deceased sorcerers and enslaving humanity, making Dave the sole barrier against this impending doom.
Overcoming his initial resistance to the burgeoning relationship with Becky, Dave persuaded Balthazar to acknowledge their connection. However, an attempt to use magic for mundane tasks led to unforeseen chaos, resulting in the cancellation of their date. When things spiraled out of control, Balthazar swooped in to rescue Dave and address the limitations of his magical capabilities. Meanwhile, Horvath and Drake conspired together, leading to the theft of the Grimhold and a betrayal stemming from Drake’s own magical ambitions. Subsequently, Horvath unleashed an ancient witch named Abigail Williams to abduct Becky, stripping her of her unique powers as leverage against Dave.
Feeling cornered, Dave was coerced by Horvath into relinquishing his ring, which rendered him powerless. In a rapid turn of events, Balthazar chased Horvath through Battery Park. As Morgana wove her malevolent spell, Horvath animated the Charging Bull sculpture to confront Balthazar. In an electrifying sequence, Dave stunned Horvath with a Tesla coil while Balthazar’s eagle proudly lifted the bull to safety. Unbeknownst to her, Becky inadvertently interrupted Morgana’s spell, temporarily restraining her.
As the conflict escalated, Balthazar utilized his ability to absorb magical forces, merging Morgana’s essence within himself alongside that of Veronica. However, Morgana breached this defense, unleashing a devastating attack targeting both Balthazar and Veronica. In a climactic moment without his ring, Dave intervened, foiling Morgana’s plan.
With Morgana overpowering their defenses, she finally redirected an energy bolt meant for Veronica towards Balthazar, claiming his life. In a desperate bid to revive him, Dave crafted a larger Tesla coil using the surrounding lamp posts and power lines, channeling a tremendous surge of energy that ultimately obliterated Morgana.
With Horvath defeated and Morgana vanquished, Dave worked tirelessly to revive Balthazar, successfully restoring his heart with plasma shocks. In a heartwarming reunion, Balthazar, Veronica, and Dave embarked on a new journey together, celebrating their victory by flying to France for a blissful breakfast on the back of Balthazar’s majestic eagle.
