What year does the Terminator first arrive in the movie?

Plot Summary

In a desolate future ravaged by mechanical monstrosities, humanity embarks on a protracted struggle against an insidious enemy known as the Machines. But the war’s climax will not unfold in this dystopian realm; instead, it will transpire in the past, specifically our present day.

As the timeline shifts to 1984, an enigmatic figure (Arnold Schwarzenegger) materializes through a vortex of intense energy, accompanied by a blinding flash. This behemoth, with its imposing stature and chiseled features, dispatches two hoodlums with ease before succumbing to a third assailant’s attack. However, the Terminator’s sheer strength proves too great for its adversary, as it tears open the punk’s torso, claiming his clothes in the process.

Meanwhile, in a dingy downtown alleyway, a battered and bruised stranger, significantly smaller than the first arrival, is forced through a shimmering portal and crashes to the ground, writhing in agony. A police cruiser rounds the corner, and two officers demand the intruder’s surrender. The disheveled figure, however, manages to evade capture by launching a surprise attack on one of the cops, relieving him of his firearm. As the officer becomes perplexed by the stranger’s inquiry about the date and year, he consults a nearby phonebook and tracks down the listing for “Sarah Connor.”

In a separate narrative thread, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) leads a mundane existence as a solitary waitress, sharing an apartment with her friend Ginger (Bess Motta). Her life appears stagnant, lacking direction or purpose. The Terminator, meanwhile, pilfers a vehicle and breaks into a sporting goods store to steal a firearm. This mechanical monolith then consults the phonebook, targeting three listings for “Sarah Connor” in the Los Angeles area. Its first stop is an address, where it encounters a diminutive canine that barks defiantly at its approach. As Sarah Connor opens the door, the Terminator bursts inside and brutally slays her with the stolen pistol.

Not long after this brutal incident, Sarah’s coworker drags her to the television, where she bears witness to the gruesome murder of a woman sharing her name at the hands of an unknown assailant.

As Sarah and her roommate Ginger meticulously prepare for separate nights in, a sense of unease settles over them. Ginger’s boyfriend Matt is set to spend the night, while Sarah plans a low-key evening out for pizza. But her tranquility is shattered when she catches a news report announcing the tragic demise of another woman sharing her name. Her concerns escalate as she tries to reach Ginger, only to have her roommate and Matt oblivious to her calls as they indulge in a moment of intimacy. Tragedy strikes when the Terminator bursts into their midst, mercilessly slaughtering both Ginger and Matt before even acknowledging Sarah’s pleas on the answering machine. As the reality of her situation sets in, Sarah takes desperate measures by contacting Lt. Traxler, the detective investigating the Sarah Connor killings, who instructs her to remain hidden until backup arrives.

Meanwhile, a second figure, Kyle Reese, emerges from the shadows, his presence a harbinger of chaos. This soldier from the future has been sent back in time to intercept the Terminator and prevent it from carrying out its sinister mission: the elimination of Sarah Connor, the mother-to-be of humanity’s savior, John Connor. As the Terminator closes in on Sarah at the club, Kyle intervenes, unleashing a barrage of gunfire that sends the cyborg crashing to the floor. Together, they make a daring escape through the club’s back door, pursued by their relentless foe.

As they flee from the chaos, Kyle shares with Sarah the gravity of her situation and the dire consequences should the Terminator succeed in its mission. He reveals that John Connor will lead humanity’s resistance against an apocalyptic future controlled by Skynet, a powerful artificial intelligence system hell-bent on exterminating human life. This desperate attempt to alter their destiny has sent Kyle back in time, marked with a barcode as a slave of sorts, to protect Sarah from the Terminator’s deadly grasp.

As the Terminator’s relentless pursuit continues, it suddenly appears at the scene, prompting Reese to seize control of the wheel and unleash a barrage of shotgun blasts that ultimately send the cyborg crashing into a nearby wall. After their car screeches to a halt, Sarah and Reese are apprehended, only to discover that their metallic nemesis has managed to slip away unnoticed.

At Traxler’s police precinct, Sarah is informed of Ginger’s untimely demise and learns that Reese has been handed over to the enigmatic psychiatrist Peter Silberman (Earl Boen). When Reese shares his tale of the Terminator’s impending doom, he is met with skepticism and dismissed as a paranoid delusional. During their interview, Silberman queries Reese about the lack of futuristic weaponry, prompting the latter to explain that only organic matter can traverse the time portal.

Meanwhile, the Terminator retreats to a seedy hotel room where it tends to its wounded eye, revealing a sophisticated robotic implant beneath the damaged tissue. Donning a pair of sunglasses for added menace, the cyborg equips itself with a SPAS shotgun and an AR-15 rifle before setting out to recapture Sarah.

Back at the precinct, the Terminator makes its presence known, brutally dispatching every officer in its path as it demands to see Sarah. As the chaos unfolds, Traxler meets his demise, and Reese manages to escape confinement. He ultimately reunites with Sarah, who is initially skeptical of Kyle’s apocalyptic warnings but gradually comes to grasp the gravity of their situation.

As they seek refuge at a roadside motel, Reese ventures out to procure the necessary chemicals for explosives, leaving Sarah to shower and make a phone call to her mother - unaware that this “mother” is actually an android attempting to recreate the voice of her departed maternal figure. The two subsequently stockpile their arsenal, waiting patiently for the perfect moment to strike.

Sarah’s growing unease is momentarily assuaged when Kyle reveals his own emotional vulnerability, confessing that he has never experienced romantic love. This candid admission touches Sarah deeply, and she begins to reciprocate his affections. As they grow closer, Reese imparts a cherished photo of Sarah, revealing the depth of his feelings for her. In a moment of tender intimacy, Sarah and Kyle come together, resulting in the conception of their future son, John.

As the relentless Terminator zeroes in on its quarry, Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese make a desperate bid for freedom, hijacking a rugged pickup truck to evade their pursuer. In a last-ditch effort to even the odds, Reese unleashes the pipe bombs he and Sarah had concocted, striking the Terminator with a series of valiant but ultimately futile attacks. The cyborg’s pursuit proves relentless, however, and it recovers from the assault, only to be struck by a speeding semi-tanker truck. As the wreckage smolders, the Terminator rises from the ashes like a monstrous phoenix, its flesh scorched beyond recognition.

Undeterred, Reese seizes his final opportunity to turn the tables, detonating the tanker’s tank trailer in a blaze of explosive fury. The blast sends the Terminator tumbling, its skeletal form emerging from the wreckage like some grotesque puppet on strings. As Sarah and Reese share a moment of tender triumph, the cyborg’s Endoskeleton materializes, its very existence a harbinger of doom.

Reese sacrifices himself to save Sarah, his final act a poignant reminder of the price he paid for their love. As she nurses her mangled leg in the abandoned factory, Sarah confronts the Terminator once more, only to discover that even death cannot extinguish the cyborg’s malevolent spark. The top half of the Terminator’s skeleton attacks Sarah, its unyielding determination a chilling reminder of the horrors it has unleashed.

In a desperate bid for survival, Sarah lures the cyborg into a hydraulic press, her cunning and resourcefulness pitted against the Terminator’s relentless drive. As the machine’s red glowing eye fades, Sarah is left to mourn the loss of Kyle Reese, her love forever lost in the swirling vortex of time.

The paramedics whisk away Kyle’s lifeless form, while Sarah is driven by a sense of duty to create a record for her unborn son, John. Her Jeep navigates the desert landscape, the wind whipping up sandstorms as she contemplates the weighty decision whether to reveal Reese’s true identity to their child. The stakes are high, and Sarah knows that the fate of humanity hangs precariously in the balance.

As she stops at a gas station, the young boy who takes her picture with a Polaroid camera unwittingly echoes the prophetic words Reese had whispered in his sleep: “A storm’s coming.” Sarah acknowledges the warning, her gaze scanning the horizon as the tempest approaches. With a sense of foreboding, she drives off into an uncertain future, the fate of humanity hanging precariously in the balance.
