In the stifling atmosphere of 1910 London, England, Kate Croy (Helena Bonham Carter) navigates a treacherous web of societal expectations and personal desires under the watchful eye of her calculating Aunt Maude (Charlotte Rampling). The path to this arranged marriage is paved by Lord Mark (Alex Jennings), a sophisticated aristocrat with a grand estate, who begins courting Kate with Aunt Maude's blessing. However, Kate's heart belongs to Merton Densher (Linus Roache), a young journalist from humble beginnings, whom she has secretly been meeting in defiance of her aunt's disapproval.
