The Year Between

As Clemence Miller's sophomore year at college spirals out of control, her erratic behavior drives a wedge between herself and everyone around her. The relentless barrage of bullying culminates in her miserable roommate, Eliza, sounding the alarm to the administration and Clemence's mother, Sherri (Smith-Cameron), who runs a craft store. Sherri's concerns prompt an intervention, which ultimately forces Clemence to abandon academia and return home, where she finds her childhood bedroom transformed into a makeshift office space. Instead, she's relegated to the basement, a cold and unforgiving environment.

Upon consulting a psychiatrist (Buck), Clemence receives a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and is prescribed a regimen of medication, including lithium, to stabilize her turbulent moods. Initially resistant to the idea, she's eventually goaded into cooperation by Sherri's exasperated persistence.

Meanwhile, Clemence's family offers a lukewarm reception. Her father, Don (Buscemi), a local schoolteacher, strives to remain optimistic, while her younger siblings are openly wary. Carlin (Robinson), Clemence's sister, is particularly apprehensive about inheriting her older sibling's traits and works tirelessly to boost her ACT scores in an attempt to avoid this fate. Neil (Oleff), Clemence's brother, is cautious around her, unsure of how to navigate the turmoil that surrounds her.

Undaunted by her circumstances, Clemence begins attending therapy sessions with a psychologist (Odom) and secures a part-time job at a local thrift store. She forges a tentative connection with coworker Beth (Simone), and manages to stay sober from substances. However, upon rekindling her friendship with Ashik (Jacob), a former partying companion, Clemence begins to jeopardize the progress she's made, putting her fragile support system at risk of unraveling.
