In 1972, amidst the chaos of war, a group of American soldiers in South Vietnam frantically work together to evacuate one of their wounded comrades from the battlefield, but in the midst of this desperate attempt, they are inadvertently left behind as the helicopter carrying "Blaster", "Sailor" and Wilkes takes off without them. This harrowing incident would soon become a driving force for retired Marine Colonel Jason Rhodes (character name), whose relentless pursuit of answers began ten years later.

In the early 1980s, Colonel Rhodes' tireless efforts to find his son Frank, an Army Lieutenant listed as "missing in action" since that fateful day in 1972, had yielded nothing but false leads and dead ends. Yet, despite the lack of official support from the United States government, Rhodes remained convinced that Frank was still alive and being held captive in Laos as a prisoner of war.

As he continued to search Southeast Asia, Rhodes found solace in the camaraderie of fellow Vietnam War veterans who shared his determination to bring their missing comrades home. These men, including Blaster, Wilkes (character name), Sailor, Johnson, Charts, and Kevin Scott, a former Force Recon Marine whose own father had been listed as MIA, all answered Rhodes' call to join him on a perilous rescue mission.

With the financial backing of McGregor, a wealthy oil businessman whose son had served alongside Frank in Vietnam, the team began training near Galveston, Texas, preparing themselves for the treacherous journey ahead. As they arrived in Southeast Asia, however, the CIA intervened, confiscating Rhodes' equipment and weapons, fearing an international crisis would ensue from his actions.

Undeterred, the team members pooled their expense money to purchase replacement supplies, and Rhodes turned to an acquaintance, Jiang, a former local drug baron who had lost a son in Vietnam. Jiang's daughters, Lai Fun and Mai Lin, joined the expedition, and he provided them with outdated but reliable World War II-era weapons. As they navigated this treacherous landscape, Charts formed a tentative bond with Lai Fun.

In the midst of their mission to rescue Frank and other American soldiers still held captive in Laos, this group of unlikely heroes must confront not only the harsh realities of war but also their own personal demons, as the past and present collide in a desperate bid for redemption.

As the group ventures near the Laotian border, a sudden and brutal attack by a border patrol unit claims the life of Mai Lin (character name). In the aftermath, the team fragments: Rhodes leads Charts, Sailor, Johnson, and Lai Fun to a helicopter compound, dubbed the "air team," to secure escape transportation, while Jiang, Blaster, Scott, and Wilkes form the "ground team" to scout out the prison camp. The ground team's discovery of four Americans among the prisoners sparks hope, but their inability to locate Frank sends a palpable sense of unease throughout the group.

As night falls, both teams prepare for the impending attack, with Blaster meticulously setting up demolition charges and Rhodes' air team navigating treacherous jungle terrain to reach their target. The next morning, they launch a coordinated assault, with Blaster sacrificing his life to prevent the prisoners from escaping, despite the choppers being late in arriving at the camp. In the ensuing chaos, Jiang falls victim to gunfire from the prison guards during the attack. Amidst the mayhem, the surviving team and freed POWs manage to escape, including McGregor's son. However, Frank remains unaccounted for, leaving Rhodes and his comrades with a lingering sense of uncertainty.

As the dust settles, Sailor, gravely wounded in a guard tower, makes the ultimate sacrifice by pulling the pin on his grenade and jumping off the tower, eliminating the remaining guards and clearing the way for their escape. The chopper, now free from danger, lifts off into the sky with Rhodes, Wilkes, Scott, Charts, Johnson, Lai Fun, and the four American POWs safely on board.

Stateside, McGregor's son reveals to Rhodes that Frank succumbed to illness soon after his capture, despite efforts by the other POWs, including McGregor himself, to nurse him back to health. It is revealed that Frank was the soldier who selflessly saved McGregor during the platoon's evacuation in 1972, a heroic act that would later find its way into McGregor's memories.

Upon returning home, Rhodes is met with a hero's welcome, complete with media fanfare and emotional reunions with his loved ones. With closure finally achieved regarding Frank's fate, Rhodes shares a poignant moment with his wife, Helen, embracing the joy of being reunited after their long separation.
