Plot Summary

As Casey Ryback (John Schneider) settles into civilian life in Denver, Colorado, running a restaurant and leaving his Navy days behind, he’s rocked by the news of his estranged brother James’ sudden demise. Compelled to pay his respects, Casey accompanies his niece Sarah to Los Angeles for the funeral. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they board the Grand Continental train, which winds its way through the breathtaking Rocky Mountains from Denver to LA. As they get to know fellow travelers and crew members, including the charming steward/porter Bobby Zachs (Duane Whitaker), and the culinary team on board, they form a sense of camaraderie that will prove crucial in the face of adversity.

As the train navigates the majestic mountain terrain, it’s flagged down by a group of terrorists, who brutally murder the engineer and brakeman. Led by the cunning and tech-savvy Travis Dane (Steven Seagal), Marcus Penn, and their cohorts, the hijackers swiftly sever phone lines, herd passengers and staff into the last two cars, and take control of the situation. Casey seizes the opportunity to strike back, dispatching one terrorist before slipping away unnoticed.

Dane’s true intentions are revealed when he demands that former Department of Defense colleagues spill secrets related to Grazer One, a top-secret military satellite capable of unleashing devastating tectonic forces underground. The terrorists’ leader has been fired from his job at the Pentagon and faked his own suicide, but now seeks revenge by using Grazer to target a nuclear reactor located beneath the Eastern seaboard. Dane demonstrates the weapon’s potency by destroying a Chinese biological weapons facility masquerading as a fertilizer production plant, and then takes out an airliner carrying one of his investors’ ex-wives.

As the U.S. government struggles to pinpoint Dane’s location, he remains one step ahead, using Grazer to evade detection and manipulate events from afar. Meanwhile, Casey and Zachs join forces to take matters into their own hands, sending a crucial message to Admiral Bates (William Sadler) at the Mile High Cafe.

With this information in hand, Bates reluctantly greenlights a daring mission by two F-117 stealth aircraft to destroy the train and bring Dane’s reign of terror to an end. As the stakes escalate, Casey finds himself at the forefront of a high-stakes battle to save innocent lives and restore order to the Grand Continental.

As Zachs’ misguided trajectory becomes apparent, a dire collision with a Southern Pacific behemoth carrying flammable cargo looms large. Undeterred, Casey wages a solo war against the mercenaries, methodically dispatching them while freeing the hostages from their grasp. Meanwhile, Dane leverages his technical expertise to pinpoint the stealths and reprogram Grazer to neutralize the threats before they can fulfill their deadly mission. However, Penn’s keen understanding of Casey’s troubled past proves instrumental in exploiting this knowledge, using Sarah as bait to lure him into a confrontation. Despite this strategic ploy, Casey ultimately gains the upper hand, delivering a fatal blow that claims Penn’s life.

As Ryback intercepts Dane on the brink of departing in a helicopter hovering ominously above the train, he learns of the futility in halting the satellite’s impending destruction of Washington. In response, Casey takes aim and fires, shattering Dane’s computer and inflicting grave injuries that send him tumbling out of a train window. With control of the satellite restored at the Pentagon, authorities remotely detonate the device mere seconds before it would have unleashed its deadly payload on the iconic building, just as the two trains hurtle towards each other.

Their explosive collision occurs on a precarious trestle, resulting in a catastrophic blast that reduces the bridge to rubble and claims the life of Scotty, the mercenary at the helm. Ryback dashes through the inferno-stricken train, finally emerging onto the rope ladder dangling from the helicopter. Dane, miraculously surviving his gunshot wound and the crash, also manages to grasp the ladder, futilely urging Casey to join forces with him as he attempts to scale the helicopter. However, Casey seals the door, inadvertently severing Dane’s fingers and condemning him to a gruesome demise.

With the Pentagon informed that all passengers have been safely evacuated - following Casey’s decision to detach the final two cars from the rest of the train - Sarah and Casey pay their respects at James’ gravestone in Los Angeles, marking the poignant conclusion to this harrowing ordeal.
