As the sleepy coastal town of Midwich in Marin County, California succumbs to a mystifying "blackout" at 10 AM, its inhabitants, both human and animal, surrender to a collective slumber. The somnambulant populace remains dormant until 4 PM, when the veil of unconsciousness lifts. Following this enigmatic episode, ten women of childbearing age awaken to discover they are suddenly pregnant, including a virgin and a married woman whose husband was away in Tokyo. This phenomenon defies explanation as none of these expectant mothers opt for termination, despite their circumstances. The babies are born simultaneously at dusk in a local barn – five boys and five girls – with the stillborn infant being the exception.

These newborns, pale-skinned, blonde-haired, and cobalt-eyed, possess an uncanny intellect, but seem to lack individual personalities or consciences. As they mature, they exhibit unsettling psychic abilities that can manifest in violent, even deadly, consequences whenever they experience pain or provocation. The children soon develop a peculiar affinity for each other, with the exception of David, whose intended mate was the stillborn infant. This anomaly makes him an outcast among his peers, despite retaining some level of psychic prowess and demonstrating human compassion.

As the town's perception of these children turns increasingly negative, they are forced to find shelter in their local classroom – a rustic barn that will become their sanctuary or prison. Father George, a local priest, attempts to vanquish them with gunfire, but Mara, the daughter of Dr. Alan and Barbara, harnesses her powers to force him into self-destruction. This act sparks a chain reaction that reveals the existence of similar colonies in foreign countries, where these "blackout" children have been eliminated due to their inhuman nature – sometimes at the cost of entire townships.

As tensions escalate, Dr. Susan Verner is coerced into revealing the well-preserved alien corpse of David's intended mate, which she had kept as a research specimen. The children exact a terrible revenge upon her, forcing her to impale herself in a gruesome act. Faced with an enraged mob seeking to destroy them, the children's very presence descends into chaos, prompting the scientific team to abandon Midwich altogether.

As a mastermind, Alan concocts an intricate plan to conceal a ticking time bomb within a seemingly innocuous briefcase in the unsuspecting children's classroom. His mind whirs into high gear as he visualizes a brick wall, creating an impenetrable mental barrier that prevents the truth from seeping out to the young minds around him. Meanwhile, Jill implores Alan to spare David, who she believes doesn't fit the mold of his peers, her voice laced with desperation and compassion.

In a calculated attempt to execute this mercy, Alan instructs David to step outside for just a moment, claiming he needs to retrieve his notebook from his car. But as the seconds tick by, the other children begin to sense that something is amiss, their collective intuition heightening as they catch glimpses of Alan's furtive glances and nervous tics.

Mara's mask finally cracks, her true nature bursting forth like a pent-up dam as she shatters Alan's defenses, revealing the devastating truth: the innocuous briefcase contains a deadly payload. The classroom clock ticks away with ominous precision, its hands frozen in anticipation of the impending doom that is to come. And then, in an instant, it all goes up in flames, the blast wave claiming every life within, including Alan's own. Jill, meanwhile, holds David at arm's length outside, shielding him from the horror as the screams and chaos echo through the air.

Later, as they hit the open road, Jill turns to David with a glimmer of determination in her eyes: "We'll find someplace where nobody knows who we are – a place where we can start anew, free from the shadows of our dark past."
