John Cale, portrayed by Channing Tatum, serves as a dedicated U.S. Capitol Police officer assigned to the Speaker of the House, Eli Raphelson, played by Richard Jenkins. This assignment follows Cale’s heroism in saving Raphelson’s nephew during a perilous tour in Afghanistan. Despite his bravery, Cale finds himself grappling with the challenge of strengthening his relationship with his politically passionate daughter, Emily, whose admiration for politics is something he wishes to nurture. To impress her, he aims for a position in the Secret Service, but his plans unravel when he faces the disheartening judgment of Carol Finnerty, a former college peer portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who deems him unfit due to his perceived lack of respect for authority.
In a bid to shield the truth from Emily about his failed interview, Cale enjoins her on a tour of the White House. Meanwhile, the tension escalates as U.S. President James Sawyer, played by Jamie Foxx, is on the verge of unveiling a contentious peace treaty aimed at withdrawing military presence from the Middle East. Chaos ensues as a mercenary disguised as a janitor stealthily plants a bomb within a cart inside the rotunda of the Capitol, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that claims numerous lives and obliterates part of the building.
Amidst this turmoil, Raphelson fortuitously escapes harm and is taken to an underground command center alongside Finnerty. However, the situation deteriorates further as the White House is locked down, isolating Cale from Emily, who has wandered off during the tour. As mercenaries led by Jason Clarke infiltrate, masquerading as video technicians, they commence a ruthless assault against the Secret Service and take the tour group hostage. In a desperate move, Cale manages to arm himself and evades a mercenary named Killick.
Following protocol, the retiring head of the Presidential detail, James Woods, guides President Sawyer and his team to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. However, the mission takes an unexpected turn as Walker’s betrayal unfolds—he reveals himself as the mastermind behind the chaos, seeking vengeance for his son’s death in a failed botched operation. As Cale, driven by the desire to find his daughter, embarks on a harrowing journey, he confronts a series of escalating threats and finds himself with a stolen gun and radio to locate and ultimately rescue President Sawyer.
As events unfold, Sawyer is coerced into activating the nuclear football amidst a backdrop of betrayal and deception, culminating in a gripping race against time. Cale and Sawyer discover they must counter not just the mercenaries but also the traitorous figures within the government. When it seems all hope is lost, a desperate plea from Cale incites a cascade of heroic actions as the protagonists engage in a showdown against overwhelming odds.
In a final act of valor and redemption, Cale confronts the remaining adversaries, revealing the depth of his resilience and the lengths to which he would go to save his daughter and regain control over the White House. As the story unfolds, alliances shift and hidden motives come to light, ultimately leading to a breathtaking conclusion that sees Cale proving himself worthy of a place among the elite, as he earns a position within the Secret Service and takes to the skies with Emily and President Sawyer, signaling a new beginning for their fractured family.
