As the holiday season approaches, James and Hayley, still an item since the events of the previous film, are invited by their respective families - the Hugheses and the Taylors - to join them for a festive retreat in the picturesque Austrian Alps. However, Hayley's father, ever the contrarian, insists on exploring alternative accommodations, much to the chagrin of James's family.

Upon arrival at the airport, the families' shuttle services become hopelessly entwined, leaving the working-class Taylors to find themselves ensconced in the luxurious Hugheses' resort, while their opposite numbers are relegated to a humble hostel. As the situation unfolds, Hayley stumbles upon an engagement ring in what she believes is James's luggage (in reality, it belongs to his father), leading her to mistakenly assume that he intends to propose.

After a night of navigating the unexpected arrangement, the families finally converge at the resort, where they embark on a skiing adventure. Hayley, eager to keep up with James's childhood friend Bea, finds herself in over her head and ends up back at the gondola, watching as James and Bea whizz down the mountain together.

Meanwhile, Hayley's father lets slip his suspicions about Hayley's expectations of a proposal during a heated exchange with Diane, who has confided to Hayley that she may be pursuing an American film school scholarship in Los Angeles. Later that evening, Hayley unwittingly intercepts James rehearsing a proposal for Bea, leading her to mistakenly assume he is actually proposing to her.

James catches up to Hayley and makes his move, but given his state of intoxication, Hayley is skeptical of his sincerity and rejects him. Convinced that it was James's father who intended to propose to Diane, she breaks off the engagement and departs with her family, leaving the hotel in disarray.

The following morning, the Hugheses set out to rectify the situation, but by then the Taylors have long since departed. Rushing to the airport, they manage to intercept the plane just in time for James to make amends with Hayley. The two families reunite at the resort, determined to salvage their holiday and make memories that will last a lifetime.

As the festive atmosphere of Christmas morning settles over them, James's father drops a bombshell that shatters his understanding of the past. The exquisite engagement ring, once belonging to his beloved mother, was never intended for Diane - instead, it was always meant for James himself, a symbol of a future union with Hayley. The revelation sends shockwaves through James's psyche as he gazes upon the sparkling gemstone, its presence now imbued with new meaning.

As the family opens their presents, James and Hayley exchange gifts that hold subtle yet significant implications. His thoughtful gesture includes a key to his apartment, a tangible representation of the forever possibility that has been simmering beneath the surface of their relationship. In contrast, Hayley's card, penned weeks prior, contains a poignant revelation - she had always intended to pop the question to James, and now, with his father's words still echoing in his mind, he accepts her proposal with an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude.
