Plot Summary

In the midst of a somber atmosphere, Detective (Duane Sharp) receives an ominous phone call from a local temple, foretelling the impending demise of one of its monks. Upon arrival, he finds the meditating monk (Howard Fong) lifeless on the floor, sparking a flurry of questions and frustration as the other temple inhabitants, Ed (Ezra Buzzington), Jane (Debra Miller), and the enigmatic Master (Kim Chan), provide cryptic answers that only deepen the mystery. Despite their insistence that they had nothing to do with the monk’s death, Detective Sharp remains convinced it’s a case of murder.

As he delves deeper into the temple’s secrets, Ed suddenly appears at midnight, his agitation palpable as he tasks the Detective with meeting him for an unknown purpose. Meanwhile, the Detective’s growing unease is punctuated by a series of unsettling events: the discovery that his gun has gone missing, and increasingly vivid visions of his late wife Nora (Jennifer Siebel).

The investigation takes a dramatic turn when Ed, in a shocking display of desperation, takes his own life with the Detective’s gun. Shaken to the core, the Detective finds solace in Jane, and their emotional connection blossoms into a romantic encounter. However, as they bask in the warmth of their newfound love, the Detective is struck by an unsettling realization: he can no longer recall his own name.

Jane’s revelation that she is terminally ill sends the Detective reeling, his fears and insecurities resurfacing as he grapples with the prospect of losing someone else. Seeking guidance from the Master, he is met with a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of all things. As the Master’s words take root, he passes away, leaving the Detective to come to terms with the impermanence of life.

In the film’s haunting conclusion, the bereft Detective sits alone, his initial despair giving way to an acceptance that brings him peace. As Nora’s ghost finally releases its hold on him, the shaven-headed Detective finds himself holding hands with Jane, their quiet companionship a testament to the power of human connection in the face of mortality.
