Pvt. Joe Armstrong, portrayed by Michael Dudikoff, opts to join the U.S. Army instead of serving time in prison. His journey takes a perilous turn as he battles the notorious Black Star Order of Ninjas, along with communist insurgents, stationed in the Philippines. During a daring confrontation, Joe heroically saves Patricia, the daughter of Colonel William Hickock, played by Guich Koock. However, this act of bravery leads to his fellow soldiers’ disdain when he loses the rest of his platoon, making him a prime target for vengeance, particularly from the ruthless Black Star Ninja, played by Tadashi Yamashita.
Behind the scenes, the enigmatic Ortega, played by Don Stewart, orchestrates a shrewd scheme involving the hijacking of U.S. weapons for profit within the Southeast Asian militant community. Sgt. Rinaldo, portrayed by John LaMotta, leads the platoon that falls victim to ambush but narrowly escapes the clutches of the rebels. He quickly returns to inform Colonel Hickock of the kidnapping. Soon after, Joe makes his way back to the base with Patricia.
In a twist of fate, Ortega has hired an elderly Japanese veteran to serve as his gardener, a man unaware that the war has long ended. Flashbacks reveal his significant role in teaching Joe invaluable Ninjutsu skills. Meanwhile, tensions rise as Cpl. Curtis Jackson, played by Steve James, clashes with Joe, challenging him to a match that Joe wins effortlessly, earning newfound respect among his peers. Joe confides in Jackson about his amnesia while recalling his past encounters with street gangs and various martial arts disciplines.
Patricia soon returns to the base, only to orchestrate a clandestine dinner date. However, their plans quickly unravel when Rinaldo discovers them during a dinner meeting with Ortega, exposing his complicity in the plot against Joe. To eliminate him, Rinaldo falsely claims to deliver supplies and lures Joe into an ambush where Ninjas attack, but Joe manages to thwart them. In the chaos, he pursues a thief who absconds with his truck, unwittingly leading himself into the heart of Ortega’s weapons operation—a base fortified with the Black Star ninja training camp.
As the plot thickens, Joe finds himself captured yet again, only to be aided by Shinyuki, played by John Fujioka, the gardener and a crucial figure in his Ninjutsu training. Upon returning to the base, Joe is swiftly apprehended by military police led by Sergeant Frankie “Private Stomper” (Richard Norton). Jackson challenges the allegations against Joe, questioning their validity.
That night, the cunning Black Star Ninja leader infiltrates the holding cells, leading to a horrific massacre of the stationed officers. Joe narrowly escapes death and confronts the Ninja in a climactic duel, only to be framed as a murderer. Although only Jackson, Charley Madison played by Phillip Brock, and Patricia stand by Joe’s innocence, Colonel Hickock dismisses their claims, revealing his collusion with Ortega.
Betrayal runs deep when Colonel Hickock instructs Rinaldo to dispose of Joe. The Black Star Ninja seizes Patricia, forcing Joe into a desperate pursuit. In a climactic showdown, Joe’s vehicle collides with Rinaldo’s, resulting in the latter’s demise. As Joe re-enters Ortega’s domain, he is reunited with Shinyuki, who completes his Ninjutsu training, allowing the two to execute a surprise assault on the Black Star camp.
Tragedy ensues when Shinyuki falls in battle just as Army officers, led by Hickock, arrive. The confrontation culminates with Hickock’s death at Ortega’s hands and eventually Joe’s victory over the Black Star Ninja leader. In a race against time, Joe rescues Patricia from Ortega’s clutches just before Jackson fires a missile that obliterates the helicopter, taking out Ortega for good.
In a powerful conclusion, Joe embraces his identity as an American Ninja, allowing Jackson to officially claim Patricia as they stand united in their victory.
