An Innocent Man 1989

James “Jimmie” Rainwood, portrayed by Tom Selleck, epitomizes the essence of suburban life with his loving wife, Kate, by his side, as they share a humble home in Long Beach, California. Jimmie thrives as a highly skilled aeronautics engineer at American Airlines, supporting Kate as she ambitiously pursues her education. However, lurking beneath the surface of law and order are Detectives Mike Parnell and Danny Scalise, played by David Rasche and Richard Young respectively, who deceive the system as corrupt narcotics officers. These detectives have developed a habit of stealing drugs from their busts, using them for their own indulgences or selling them on the streets, employing threats and false accusations to silence those who challenge them.

One day, in a fit of drug-induced delusion, Parnell mistakenly invades Jimmie’s home, leading to a catastrophic confrontation. As Jimmie emerges wielding a hairdryer after a shower, Parnell, misreading the situation, opens fire, leaving Jimmie critically wounded. To escape repercussions for their mistake, Parnell and Scalise contrive a scheme to pin the blame on Jimmie by planting drugs and a firearm in his residence, fabricating a narrative that paints him as a drug dealer.

Unaware of the officers’ malfeasance, the authorities quickly latch onto this false narrative. With a prior conviction for marijuana possession haunting him, Jimmie’s pleas of innocence fall on deaf ears, and he finds himself faced with a six-year prison sentence. Although the Internal Affairs department takes notice of the case, their hands are tied due to a lack of tangible evidence against the crooked cops, leaving Jimmie feeling desolate and powerless.

As he enters prison life, Jimmie quickly learns that he is ill-equipped for the brutal realities that surround him. The chilling murder of his cellmate in the yard is just the beginning of a harrowing series of events; he soon confronts the merciless Black Guerrilla Family, headed by the calculating Jingles. After suffering serious injuries from a violent encounter with them, Jimmie spends weeks in recovery, both physically and mentally shaken.

Amidst this turmoil, he receives guidance from Virgil Cane, a wise and seasoned inmate played by F. Murray Abraham, who urges him to “take care of his problem” with Jingles. Although tempted to resort to violence, Jimmie initially seeks a peaceful outcome. This resolve is tested when he is made to witness an atrocity that pushes him to take a stand. Armed with a plexiglass shank, he bravely confronts Jingles, with Virgil keeping watch. While the authorities suspect Jimmie of involvement in the ensuing chaos, they lack the evidence to hold him accountable, resulting in his confinement for three months in a dark, solitary cell.

Upon his return to the general population, Jimmie is regarded as a minor hero for ending Jingles’ reign of terror, but the repercussions of his prison experience resonate deeply. In a desperate bid for freedom from the chaos they’ve caused, they attempt to flee with a large drug haul, but fate intervenes when masked figures, including Jimmie and Malcolm, another ally from prison, ambush them.

The confrontation escalates when an unexpected sting operation turns bad, leading to tragic outcomes, including Malcolm’s death at Parnell’s hands. Amid the chaos, Jimmie and the detectives face off, culminating in a confrontation that forces Jimmie to confront Parnell again. Just when it seems Parnell may escape justice, Kate’s heartfelt plea compels Jimmie to relent, allowing authorities to apprehend Parnell, who is now destined to share a prison with Jimmie.
