In a twist of fate, a group of Japanese ninjas stumbles upon an ancient relic—a weathered chest—washed ashore alongside a mysterious white infant boy. Legend has it that a foreigner, unlike any other, would eventually infiltrate their ranks and become a master of their craft. Thus, the baby, named Haru, is embraced by the clan, raised with the hope that he will one day fulfill this prophecy. Yet, as Haru grows into adulthood, his clumsiness and inability to grasp the complex art of ninjutsu prevent him from graduating with his peers.
Tasked with protecting the temple while the clan embarks on a dangerous mission, Haru seizes the chance to adopt a ninja’s persona when he meets Sally Jones, an American woman seeking help. Suspecting her partner, Martin Tanley, of dubious activities, she implores Haru to investigate. As Haru digs deeper, he unveils a tangled web of deceit involving Tanley and his accomplice, Nobu, who are entrenched in a counterfeiting operation. Unfortunately, he is unable to warn Sally before she leaves, leaving him to consider the weight of her predicament.
Resolute in his intentions, Haru embarks on a quest to find Sally, traveling from Japan to Beverly Hills. The clan’s wise sensei dispatches Haru’s adoptive brother, Gobei, to discreetly watch over him during this journey, intent on keeping this wayward ninja true to his heritage and responsibilities.
Upon settling into the lavish surroundings of Beverly Hills, Haru forms an unexpected friendship with hotel bellboy Joey Washington. Under Haru’s guidance, Joey receives a rapid education in stealthy ninja techniques, completely unaware of Haru’s true agenda. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to him, Gobei is behind the scenes, orchestrating events to ensure Haru remains focused.
As the plot thickens, Haru discovers the real identity of Sally—actually named Alison Page—and learns she has been living a double life, collecting evidence against Tanley, the ruthless man responsible for her sister’s murder. Delving into this perilous underworld, Haru uncovers a plot involving Tanley to acquire counterfeit plates, escalating into violent confrontations with rival gangs in Little Tokyo.
Amidst the chaos, two gang members meet their end, with Haru branded as the primary suspect. Undeterred, he retreats to his hotel, seeking wisdom from Gobei. With renewed purpose, Haru continues his search for Alison, pinpointing Tanley’s extravagant mansion.
When Haru finally locates Alison, he faces an astonishing reality: she has been using her false identity to gather intel on Tanley while also romantically involved with him. Struggling with the complex web of loyalty and deception, Haru learns of Tanley’s plans to employ a skilled counterfeiter, Chet Walters. Feeling compelled to act, Haru disguises himself as Walters and infiltrates Tanley’s heavily fortified warehouse. However, his unrefined efforts at faking currency lead to his capture by Tanley’s goons, and in a twist, Alison rescues him but subsequently falls into Tanley’s treacherous hands.
In a bid to save Alison, Haru enlists Joey’s assistance to find Tanley’s warehouse, setting the stage for a dramatic rescue mission. As the fray escalates, Haru attempts to intervene only to be outnumbered. Fortunately, Gobei emerges to assist, creating a brief diversion allowing them to save Alison from her dire situation. With a bomb ticking away in the makeshift prison cell where Alison is held, Haru uses a forklift to create exit points, launching a daring rescue.
In a courageous moment, Haru takes on the daunting task of disarming the bomb, but in his haste, he inadvertently resets it, giving them only minutes to flee. As Gobei battles against persistent guards, Haru rushes to his aid, showcasing extraordinary martial arts skills that leave their adversaries stunned.
With newfound resolve, Haru rescues Gobei, takes down additional guards, and faces off against Nobu and his allies. Just then, Joey spectacularly crashes through a window, inadvertently knocking himself and one guard unconscious in an attempt to assist. Haru and Gobei engage in a fierce confrontation, ultimately besting Nobu and the remaining henchmen.
With victory in hand, Haru and Gobei confront Tanley in a dramatic showdown. Tension rises as Haru accidentally takes out Gobei in the process but, undeterred, he forces Tanley into retreat while continuing his effort to rescue Alison.
As the climax unfolds, Haru employs an inventive approach, utilizing a large harpoon gun to breach the room where they face Tanley, causing the explosive device to ignite. With Alison freed, Haru manages to cleverly outmaneuver Tanley and his goons, leading to their capture by the LAPD.
In the aftermath of this harrowing adventure, Joey shares his misadventures with the press, inadvertently misrepresented as a “ninja” regaling tales of “The Great Black Ninja.” Meanwhile, as Haru and Alison prepare to start anew in Beverly Hills, Gobei finds himself ensnared in an unexpected grappling hook incident, leaving him to float helplessly in the Pacific Ocean. With a heartfelt apology resonating, Haru wraps up this thrilling saga, poignantly reflecting on his sensei’s plight.
