Plot Summary

This heart-wrenching story begins with Stanley Phillips, played by John Cusack, who finds himself the only man in a support group for spouses of military personnel deployed overseas. The following day, he receives the devastating news that his wife, a soldier, has died in Iraq. Overwhelmed with grief, Stanley struggles to find the words to share this tragedy with their two young daughters.

When his daughters return home from school, they are surprised to find their father waiting for them instead of at his job as a sales clerk. The eldest daughter, Heidi, 12, played by Shelan O’Keefe, brings in a casserole that a compassionate neighbor has left on their doorstep. In an attempt to shield them from the terrible news, Stanley insists they shouldn’t eat it just yet. Realizing he needs to delay the inevitable truth, he quickly decides to take them out for the evening.

He piles the girls into their family SUV, initiating what he hopes will be a diversion away from their sorrow. They stop at a local food and entertainment complex, but just as they settle into the arcade, Stanley unexpectedly whisks them back into the car. He asks them what they would wish to do if they could choose anything, and the younger daughter, Dawn, 8, played by Gracie Bednarczyk, excitedly suggests a trip to “Enchanted Gardens” in Florida. Although Heidi is concerned about her homework report on their mom that’s due the next day, Stanley seizes on Dawn’s whim and drives toward the sunshine state.

During their impromptu journey, Stanley leaves a series of emotional updates on their home answering machine, where the voice of Grace, portrayed by Katie Honaker, still echoes to greet callers. Over the next three days, he attempts to navigate his grief while preventing his anti-war brother John, played by Alessandro Nivola, from revealing the heartbreaking truth to his daughters.

Amidst this turmoil, Heidi tries to reach out to her school to manage her homework. However, the sympathetic school secretary, unaware of the family’s tragedy, assumes the girls are simply mourning. As the family finally arrives at Enchanted Gardens, Heidi begins to sense something is amiss, as Stanley has been acting out of character, giving them the freedom to pierce their ears, which is against their previous family rules.

After a fun-filled day at the amusement park, Stanley takes the exhausted girls to a beach to watch the sunset. In this poignant moment, he finally breaks the silence, telling them that their beloved mother, Grace is gone. The film concludes with emotional scenes of Heidi presenting her school report as a heartfelt eulogy for their mother at the church and the remaining family members gathered at Grace Phillip’s grave, showcasing their journey through grief and love.
