Johanna Parry relocates to a new town to take on the role of housekeeper for Mr. McCauley, an elderly gentleman who requires assistance in maintaining his home. Additionally, she is responsible for looking after McCauley’s granddaughter, Sabitha. During her adjustment to this new environment, she encounters Sabitha’s father, Ken, who is also McCauley’s son-in-law, but lives in Chicago and is not around to care for his daughter.
One day, after questioning Sabitha’s best friend, Edith, about the whereabouts of Sabitha’s mother, Johanna learns from Edith that Ken’s wife passed away several years earlier. In an attempt to foster a connection, Ken extends an invitation to Johanna and Sabitha for dinner, accompanied by a warm note which his daughter delivers. Johanna responds with a letter of her own, and Edith, seeking mischief, offers to deliver it to the post office. However, she deviates from her initial intent and instead intercepts Johanna’s correspondence.
As part of a cruel prank, Edith and another teenager create a forged love letter from Ken to Johanna, claiming to be from him. They even set up a fake email account to impersonate Ken, who by the way does not have email access. As “Ken,” the girls begin to craft responses to Johanna’s affectionate messages. He affectionately refers to her as “my only friend,” but as their deception escalates, everything is set to change when “Ken” extends an invitation for Johanna to visit him in Chicago, leading to a tangled web of emotions and misunderstandings.
