Plot Summary

In the 1990s, the Irish Republican Army executed a massive bombing campaign across England as part of their prolonged fight for Irish reunification. In retaliation, the British security service, MI5, began enlisting freelance spies from the general public to gather intelligence on individuals suspected of IRA affiliation.

We meet a young man who’s driving down to his agricultural college in Shropshire in 1993. As he listens to the radio, news of an arrest of a suspected IRA member from his college grabs his attention, revealing that the institution has become a convenient source of fertilizer for bomb-making. This man, who doubles as a barman at the local pub while studying, soon unveils his secret identity as a part of MI5’s amateur spy initiative. He recruits two women, Sophie Jones and Mae Hansen, along with a fellow student named Ian, to embark on a clandestine mission. They successfully search for evidence in an Irish student’s home, but soon their world turns upside down when the young man wakes them in the middle of the night, revealing their identities have been compromised and they must flee the college.

Fast forward nine years, Alice Archer, portrayed by Gemma Arterton, is returning home after celebrating an office victory when she unexpectedly meets Robert Freegard, played by James Norton. Initially, Alice rebuffs his advances, but after a casual visit to his luxury car dealership the next day, she softens and accepts his invitation for a date. However, Robert fails to show up, claiming a family emergency. Alice, charmed by his quick-witted explanations, decides to give him another chance.

Their romance blossoms as Alice joins Robert on a spontaneous trip to a lighthouse, but she grows suspicious upon receiving calls from Sophie, whom Robert tries to convince is a harmless acquaintance. Determined to know the truth, Alice hires a private investigator and discovers discrepancies in Robert’s identity. When confronted, Robert reveals he is an MI5 spy using an alias for his undercover work, and he exudes an air of charm that keeps Alice entangled in his web of lies.

Alice feels something amiss as she confides in Robert about her career dissatisfaction, leading to a proposal to start a luxury car leasing business together. However, her unease intensifies when the investigator uncovers Robert’s troubling past, which includes allegations of harassment against a woman named Julie Harper. Despite Robert’s explanations, doubt gnaws at Alice’s mind, prompting her to seek out Julie’s family for clarity. The heartbreaking revelations of Robert’s manipulations weigh heavy on her heart.

Meanwhile, Sophie reaches out to Alice, sharing a deeply disturbing story about Robert’s coercive tactics that led her to sever ties with her family. Alice’s investigation reveals just how far Robert has gone to exploit every person he encounters, including a new target, Jenny Jackson, an American psychology academic. Robert’s twisted charm and manipulative behaviors are laid bare as he continues to play a chilling cat-and-mouse game.

With the help of Sophie’s parents and the police officer assigned to her case, Alice uncovers more about Robert’s sinister manipulations. As they track down Robert, Alice’s determination grows tenfold, realizing the sheer depth of Robert’s deceit. She collaborates with special agent Harland to rescue Jenny from Robert’s clutches. The gripping tension amplifies as they locate Robert’s supposed hideout, racing against time to prevent more lives from being shattered.

In a dramatic face-off, Alice confronts Robert, and as the situation escalates, a shocking twist reveals Sophie as a crucial ally. A collision with Alice’s car leads to Robert’s arrest, finally bringing an end to his exploitative reign. With Jenny rescued and reunited with her worried parents, the narrative concludes with Alice transforming her life into a successful business venture.

As Alice reflects on the harrowing experience while visiting the lighthouse, Robert sits in a prison cell, concocting yet another spy tale, suspicious and manipulative to the last.
