Plot Summary

Billy Hope, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, is an undefeated professional boxer thriving in New York City alongside his beloved wife, Maureen and their young daughter, Leila (Oona Laurence). During a championship match for the World Light Heavyweight title, Billy suffers a serious eye injury, prompting Maureen to persuade him to retire while he’s still at his peak.

At a charity event benefiting the orphanage where both he and Maureen grew up, tensions flare when an ambitious rival boxer, Miguel “Magic” Escobar, taunts him. The altercation escalates tragically, resulting in Maureen’s accidental death due to gunfire from Miguel’s brother, Hector, who promptly flees the scene.

Devastated and spiraling into a dark place, Billy turns to alcohol and drugs while hunting for Hector. A tip leads him to a dead end where he only encounters Maria (Rita Ora), a drug-addicted woman, and learns that Hector is now a father. In a moment of frustration after losing a match, Billy attacks a referee, earning a suspension and leading to massive debts, ultimately resulting in the loss of his home and possessions.

The situation worsens as his reckless behavior culminates in a near-fatal car accident while driving under the influence, which causes him to lose custody of Leila, placing her under the care of Child Protective Services officer Angela Rivera (Naomie Harris). This rock-bottom moment becomes a turning point, pushing Billy towards sobriety, although Leila remains distant, holding him accountable for their misfortunes.

Encouraged by friends, Billy secures a job at a gym run by seasoned boxer, Titus “Tick” Wills, eventually persuading Tick to become his trainer. Meanwhile, Billy’s ex-manager, Jordan Mains, who now oversees Miguel, arranges a fight that could restore Billy’s reputation. Despite his initial hesitations—fearing Billy’s quest for vengeance against Miguel might impair his performance—Tick is inspired to train him after witnessing the tragic fate of one of his students at the hands of an abusive parent.

As the fight day arrives, Leila is hesitant to reconcile with her father but agrees to watch the match on a closed circuit in the locker room alongside Angela. From the start, Miguel gains the upper hand, but with Tick’s strategic guidance, Billy adjusts his approach, utilizing the Philadelphia shell defense and delivering powerful counterattacks, ultimately gaining momentum as the final round approaches.

In a climactic moment, Billy shifts his stance and unleashes a formidable left uppercut that drops the champion to the mat. Although Miguel rises before the count ends and narrowly escapes defeat, Billy secures victory by a split-decision. In a touching reunion in the locker room, Leila forgives her father’s past, allowing them to embrace in a heartfelt moment of reconciliation.
