The film begins with Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) engaging in a frantic run on a gym treadmill. In a moment of distraction, he envisions flashes from his youth, leading him to slip off the treadmill and lose consciousness. The story then takes us back to Mark’s childhood, showcasing the camaraderie he shared with his closest pals: Simon “Sick Boy” Williamson (Jonny Lee Miller), Daniel “Spud” Murphy (Ewen Bremner), and Francis “Franco” Begbie (Robert Carlyle) as they joyfully play football on the streets of their neighborhood.

Fast forward to the present, Franco’s meeting with his lawyer, Stoddart, takes a turn when he learns his parole has been rejected due to his violent tendencies. Meanwhile, Spud struggles with his heroin addiction during a support meeting, recounting how he missed crucial appointments—all due to a misunderstanding regarding daylight savings time. On the other hand, Simon finds himself involved in a risky blackmail scheme when he confronts businessman Tulloch with a compromising video involving Simon’s girlfriend, Veronika. Simon’s addiction to cocaine continues to deepen as he maneuvers through the shadows of his decisions.

After 20 years, Mark returns to Edinburgh, filled with regret for having stolen from Franco and leaving Spud with a meager sum. Upon visiting his father, he learns of his mother’s passing, a devastating revelation that adds weight to his return. Spud, desperate for reconciliation, attempts to express his regret in a letter to Gail and Fergus.
