Plot Summary

As Jaelyn and her husband Kyle arrive at their idyllic overwater bungalow in a breathtaking Vietnamese beach resort, the peaceful surroundings obscure the emotional turmoil they are grappling with. For Jaelyn, this getaway is not merely a vacation; it represents a chance to heal from the profound sorrow of her recent stillbirth, an experience that has left her feeling heavily withdrawn from those around her, caught in a moment of isolation and loss. However, their romantic holiday takes a dramatic turn on the second evening when a fierce tropical storm ravages the resort, causing their bungalow to drift away and leaving Kyle severely wounded.

As the days stretch on, Jaelyn and Kyle fight to endure their desperate situation, holding onto flickers of hope while waiting for rescue. In a bid to attract attention from passing boats, they attempt to start a smoke signal, but to their horror, it ignites what little remains of their shelter, forcing them into a precarious escape onto a makeshift raft created from scattered debris. In this tumultuous moment, Kyle expresses his remorse for how he has been emotionally absent during Jaelyn’s difficult times, rekindling the connection that had been strained by grief.

However, tragedy strikes again when a great white shark attacks their raft, inflicting severe injuries on Kyle, who ultimately succumbs to his wounds. As Jaelyn lifelessly drags her husband’s body to the shore, she collapses in sheer exhaustion, and when she awakens the next morning, she faces the horrifying reality of seeing Kyle’s remains consumed by the very predators that stole him from her.

Now fueled by a fierce determination to survive, Jaelyn embarks on a journey along the coast, propelled by the urgent need for both self-preservation and solace. Her path leads her to encounter a local fisherman, who treats her injuries and provides her temporary shelter in his coracle. However, as she finally drifts into a much-needed sleep, he ventures out to check his fishing weir, only to encounter the same shark that had previously claimed Kyle’s life, becoming its next victim.

Infuriated and heartbroken, Jaelyn channels her strength and seizes a handheld outboard motor, driving the shark away in a fierce confrontation that culminates in its eventual demise as it gets ensnared in the coracle’s anchor rope. Wrapping herself in the rope to stay afloat, she faces the shark’s final, desperate attack, skillfully avoiding danger as the anchor pierces the creature’s brain, ending its life. With the harrowing battle concluded, Jaelyn finds herself clinging to the upturned coracle, drifting towards a nearby fishing village, where hopeful fishermen soon spot her from the beach, ready to offer aid.
