As Sheriff Dentler (James Gaylyn) arrives at the crime scene in 1979, the air is thick with an unsettling tension. A grotesque scene awaits him with a lifeless body sprawled on the front porch, surrounded by eerie splatters of blood, hinting at the horrors that lie ahead. His deputy insists that he step inside the house, where the gruesome sights will leave him utterly shaken.
Exactly 24 hours earlier, the ambitious actress Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) is on the brink of a life-changing adventure as she prepares to travel to Houston, Texas, for her role in the adult film “The Farmer’s Daughter.” Accompanying her is her boyfriend and executive producer Wayne (Martin Henderson), along with the rest of the crew: writer and director RJ (Owen Campbell), his girlfriend and sound operator Lorraine (Jenna Ortega), and the talented actors Bobby-Lynne (Brittany Snow) and Jackson (Scott Mescudi). As they venture towards the remote farmhouse, Wayne sweetly nicknames Lorraine “Churchmouse,” referencing her conservative demeanor compared to the rest of the group, while Bobby-Lynne and Jackson share a heated kiss during the car ride.
Upon their arrival at the farmhouse, the crew meets Howard (Stephen Ure), the farmhouse owner, who intimidates Wayne with a rifle aimed squarely at him. However, after recognizing the group, Howard’s stance relaxes, though his expressions of distrust towards each member remain palpable. The moment Maxine steps out of the van, she catches a glimpse of Howard’s wife, Pearl (Mia Goth), watching her intently from the window.
Before the cameras start rolling, Maxine unexpectedly encounters Pearl, who seems to show a hint of interest in her, revealing her feelings of loneliness and longing for intimacy from Howard, which has been increasingly absent in their marriage due to their age gap.
As the crew gathers inside the farmhouse, they begin filming with a scene featuring Jackson and Bobby-Lynne’s intimate rendezvous, sparked by the premise of Jackson’s car mysteriously breaking down. The following scene introduces Maxine as the younger sister romantically involved with Jackson. Unbeknownst to them, Pearl is eavesdropping, visibly excited by the unfolding drama. When she later implores Howard for some form of intimacy, he rejects her advances, unable to bear the emotional burden.
That fateful night, Lorraine approaches RJ, eager to participate in the film, but he cruelly rebuffs her, prompting the rest of the crew to ultimately acquiesce and bring her onboard. As they film, RJ’s spirit dwindles, leading him to take a solitary shower where he sheds tears of despair.
Rather than wallowing, RJ finds his rebellious side as he attempts to flee from the crew entirely. However, he can’t escape Pearl, who suddenly appears in his path. Though he resists her advances, she responds with a ferocity that escalates into brutal violence. A knife plunges into the darkness, marking a chilling turning point as RJ’s body is left lifeless, blood splattered against the headlights—a foreboding signal of the terror soon to envelop the group.
Simultaneously, Wayne sets out on a search for RJ, but his reckless barefoot venture leads him to step onto a nail, his screams echoing in despair until they’re silenced by Pearl, who viciously impales him through the eye with a pitchfork, sending his body crashing down.
As the night unfolds, Lorraine desperately searches for RJ, but she unwittingly falls into Howard’s sinister plans. Locked in the cellar, she stumbles upon a horrific sight—a man’s body swinging lifelessly from the ceiling, sending her into a panic as she seeks to escape.
Howard’s machinations soon ensnare Jackson, who aids Howard in the search for Pearl. Their quest leads them to the lakeside, where grim truths reveal themselves. Upon discovering a submerged car, Howard’s dark intentions are unveiled as he mercilessly shoots Jackson, casting his body into the water, marking another soul claimed by the escalating violence.
Through the chaos, Pearl retreats to her hidden lair, leaving a trail of destruction behind. Meanwhile, Maxine awakens in terror to find herself next to the blood-soaked Pearl. Just as dread overwhelms her, Bobby-Lynne intervenes, only to be violently shoved into the nearby lake where a lurking alligator awaits with open jaws.
Lorraine, in a frantic escape attempt, faces the unyielding wrath of Howard, who wields his axe with lethal intent. At the same time, Maxine, desperately seeking sanctuary beneath their bed, overhears the couple engaged in their twisted desires. As the night stretches on, Howard’s cruelty knows no limits, leaving Pearl to indulge in depraved acts that will reverberate through time.
Maxine’s hope for an escape diminishes when she discovers the van keys are nowhere to be found. However, the shocking sight of RJ’s corpse pushes her into action. She retrieves Wayne’s gun from the glove compartment and rushes to rescue Lorraine, only to encounter her fury directed at Maxine for the terrible fate they’ve suffered. Just then, Lorraine seizes a chance to bolt for freedom but falls victim to Howard’s gunfire. In a chilling, ironic twist, Lorraine’s final breaths become the catalyst for Howard’s tragic end.
As the dust of destruction begins to settle, Maxine seizes the moment to confront Pearl, who is staggering from the aftermath of the massacre surrounding her. With a flickering television playing in the background, showcasing a preacher’s alarming message, Maxine declares her intent: “I will have the life I deserve!” However, her victory is fleeting, as she soon uncovers that Wayne’s gun is unloaded. Pearl seizes the moment, firing a shot that narrowly misses, but sends Maxine tumbling out of the house, injured and vulnerable. Yet the fire inside Maxine refuses to extinguish as she gets behind the wheel and enacts her brutal revenge against Pearl, crushing her skull with the vehicle’s weight.
The following foray of silence comes the next day as Sheriff Dentler and his officers uncover the aftermath of this horrific saga. The preacher’s grainy video continues to loop ominously while the authorities attempt to piece together the horrifying truth: Maxine is revealed to be the long-lost daughter of the preacher, uncovering her haunting search for identity. As they dig deeper, a disturbing camera is discovered, unveiling a nightmarish tableau that is sure to leave audiences in stunned silence.
In a chilling finale, as the credits roll, a trailer for a prequel titled “Pearl” serves as a chilling reminder that the horrors witnessed are merely scratching the surface of a darker, more twisted reality that lies beneath.
