Norman Rae Taurog (February 23, 1899 – April 7, 1981) was an exceptional American film director and screenwriter. From 1919 to 1968, he directed 180 films, marking a significant contribution to the motion picture industry. He gained considerable recognition at the tender age of 32 when he won the Academy Award for Best Director for 'Skippy' (1931), becoming the youngest person to secure the award till 2017. He continued to impress audiences with his prolific work, earning another nomination for Best Director for 'Boys Town' (1938).
In addition to his professional achievements, Taurog also participated in projects with a notable roster of actors during the golden era of cinema. His portfolio includes directing his nephew Jackie Cooper, along with renowned names like Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, and even the king of Rock n' Roll, Elvis Presley. An interesting fact is that Taurog directed nine Elvis Presley films, more than any other director. His influence in Hollywood was acknowledged with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1600 Vine Street. After retiring in 1968, he devoted his time to teaching at the University of Southern California School of Cinema and also served as a board member of the Directors Guild of America.
