Who is the protagonist of The Wizard of Oz?
In rural Kansas, young Dorothy Gale lives on a farm with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Trouble begins when their neighbor, Almira Gulch, obtains a sheriff’s order to take her dog, Toto, after he bites her. Determined to protect him, Dorothy runs away, only to be persuaded by a fortune-teller named Professor Marvel to return home, suggesting that Aunt Em is upset. Unfortunately, just as Dorothy makes her way back, a tornado strikes, and unable to access the locked storm cellar, she finds refuge inside the farmhouse. It is swept away, leaving her unconscious as it lands safely in an unfamiliar land.
Upon awakening, Dorothy encounters the benevolent Glinda, a good witch who appears in a bubble. Glinda informs Dorothy that she has landed in Munchkinland, a part of the magical Land of Oz, where the locals are in celebration due to her house inadvertently landing on the Wicked Witch of the East. However, the sinister Wicked Witch of the West soon arrives, seeking the magical ruby slippers that now adorn Dorothy’s feet—given to her by Glinda for protection. The Wicked Witch swears vengeance on both Dorothy and Toto, compelling Glinda to advise Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City to seek help from the Wizard of Oz.
As Dorothy journeys, she meets the Scarecrow, who longs for a brain, the Tin Man, who desires a heart, and the Cowardly Lion, who seeks courage. Together, they face various challenges, including the malicious attempts of the Wicked Witch to thwart their progress. Upon reaching the Emerald City, the group is initially barred from meeting the Wizard; however, the guard is moved by Dorothy’s tears and allows them entry. The Wizard appears as a gigantic head, promising to fulfill their wishes if they bring him the broomstick belonging to the Wicked Witch.
Their quest takes a perilous turn when Dorothy and Toto are captured by flying monkeys and brought before the Wicked Witch. While the magical slippers shield Dorothy, Toto manages to escape, leading the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion back to rescue her. In a climactic confrontation, Dorothy unwittingly causes the Witch to melt when she splashes her with water while trying to extinguish the flames on the Scarecrow’s arm.
After obtaining the broomstick from the Witch’s grateful guards, the friends return to the Wizard, only to be told to come back the next day. When Toto pulls aside a curtain, they discover the Wizard is just an ordinary man manipulating machinery. He confesses to being a humbug but still provides the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion with tokens representing their desired qualities.
With a personal connection to Kansas, the Wizard offers to take Dorothy back home in his hot air balloon. However, chaos ensues when Toto jumps off, prompting Dorothy to follow, and the balloon departs without her. Glinda appears again, revealing that Dorothy always had the power to return home using the ruby slippers but needed to discover it on her own. After a heartfelt farewell with her newfound friends, Dorothy taps her heels together three times, proclaiming, “There’s no place like home.”
Suddenly, she is back in Kansas, awakening in her own bedroom. Aunt Em attends to her, while Uncle Henry and the farmhands gather nearby, smiling as Professor Marvel pays a visit. Dorothy joyfully shares her fantastical experiences in Oz, only to receive kind-hearted chuckles from those around her. As she embraces Toto, she exclaims, “Oh, Auntie Em, there’s no place like home!”
