As the big 5-0 looms on the horizon, Kate (actress name) and Geoff Mercer's (actor name) comfortable Norfolk home is abuzz with preparations for their 45th wedding anniversary celebration. The thought of toasting their decades-long union with friends at Norwich's majestic Assembly House has them both beaming with excitement. However, the tranquility of their morning routine is shattered when Geoff (actor name) opens a letter that sends his world spinning out of control. The revelation? The body of Katya, his German paramour from the early 1960s, has finally thawed enough to become visible in a melting glacier where she tragically plunged into a crevasse during their Swiss adventure over five decades ago.

Kate, who was previously aware of Geoff's past with Katya, seems unfazed by her husband's growing unease. Geoff confides in Kate that he and Katya had pretended to be married to circumvent the social norms of their time, allowing them to share a room in the more prudish early 1960s. This peculiar arrangement has led the Swiss authorities to consider Geoff as Katya's next of kin.

As the days tick by and the party preparations continue unabated, Geoff becomes increasingly morose, his mood swings mirrored in his sudden resumption of smoking. One fateful night, Geoff retreats to the attic to rummage through his memorabilia from his time with Katya, only reluctantly sharing a picture of her with Kate when she demands to see it.

Meanwhile, Kate begins to notice that Katya bears an uncanny resemblance to herself in her youth, their dark tresses eerily similar. It's during this period of introspection that Kate discovers Geoff's scrapbook filled with mementos from his time with Katya – pressed violets from their final hike together and a carousel slide projector loaded with images of Switzerland and Katya, accompanied by a makeshift screen to view them.

As Geoff attends a reunion luncheon at his former workplace, Kate seizes the opportunity to scale the attic ladder, where she uncovers the secrets Geoff has been keeping. She's stunned to discover slides depicting Katya's pregnancy at the time of her tragic demise. This newfound knowledge sends Kate on a path of self-discovery, as she begins smoking again and confronts Geoff about his recent behavior regarding Katya – though she keeps her discovery hidden for now.

Kate's words cut deep, revealing that she believes their marital choices were influenced by Katya. In response, Geoff vows to "start again," marking the next morning with a tender gesture: serving Kate tea in bed and cooking breakfast for her. Together, they attend their anniversary party in the historic Grand Hall, where Geoff delivers an emotional speech professing his love for Kate – a declaration that seems to bring them closer together than ever before.

As the nostalgic strains of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by The Platters waft through the air, Geoff and Kate take to the dance floor once more, their movements a poignant echo of their wedding day's joy. Yet, amidst the swaying throng of partygoers, Kate's demeanor undergoes a striking transformation. Gone is her radiant smile; in its place, a mask of awkwardness settles over her features as she stiffens beside Geoff, who remains blissfully carefree, his antics and chuckles drawing admiring glances from the assembled crowd. As the song reaches its final notes, Geoff, ever the charmer, raises their arms together in triumph, the partygoers erupting into applause. But Kate's response is far more subdued; with a sudden, forceful tug, she yanks her arm free, leaving Geoff to dance off into the night, seemingly unaware of his partner's distress. Alone and adrift amidst the swirling sea of revelry, Kate stands frozen, her eyes fixed on some distant point as the music and laughter swirl around her like a maelstrom of uncertainty.
