Gypsy is a middle-aged woman who leads a solitary life while striving to get her book published. Although she works as a burlesque dancer, she yearns to transition away from that lifestyle due to her aging body and an emerging passion for writing. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes friends with her neighbor’s young boy, Sam, and his pet dog, Moses. Trouble arises when her neighbor, Ralph, reaches out for help, revealing that he has stolen a significant amount of money from a local gangster named Jack and is now being hunted down. Ralph desperately claims that Gypsy is the only person Jack might listen to.
As chaos unfolds, Ralph instructs Sam to come quickly with his iPad, as it contains vital information. Tragically, Sam arrives just in time to witness his family being brutally attacked. Meanwhile, sensing something amiss, Gypsy returns home only to find a traumatized Sam hiding in her bathroom. Though initially reluctant to disrupt her life, Gypsy knows she must protect the boy from Jack’s wrath. Without hesitation, she packs her bags, takes Sam and Moses in her semi-truck, and sets off to distance herself from her violent ex-lover.
Gypsy’s goal is to bring Sam to his uncle, a rabbi, but upon arrival, it becomes clear that the uncle is unprepared for the sudden responsibility. Gypsy aggressively argues that Sam also hasn’t been given a moment to prepare for the upheaval in his life and insists on leaving the boy with his uncle immediately. During their journey, Gypsy begins to realize that Sam is not just an innocent child; he is bright and savvy, even dabbling in cryptocurrency. While Sam is resistant to authority, Gypsy feels the weight of her past and her growing connection to the boy who has lost everything.
On her quest to safeguard Sam, Gypsy must constantly evade Jack’s men, who are relentlessly pursuing her. A tense encounter leads Gypsy to confront Jack directly, where she feigns delivering her neighbor’s dog to him. Here, he professes that she has always been the love of his life, despite their tumultuous relationship. Ultimately, Gypsy manages to deceive Jack and escapes with the dog, but soon discovers that he has placed a tracker on her vehicle.
In a thrilling escape, they outsmart Jack’s men and continue their journey, only to meet Tasmin, a woman who inadvertently becomes part of their escape plan. As they drive toward safety, Gypsy and Sam develop an unlikely bond—he begins to see Gypsy as a protector, while she wrestles with her own painful memories and fears of losing another child.
Their path takes them to Cascade, Montana, where Gypsy’s friend Lacy offers shelter. However, when Jack’s henchmen catch up with them, Gypsy quickly assesses the danger and decides to return Sam’s stolen money to Jack in hopes of ending the cycle of violence. This moment of selflessness and Gypsy’s growing attachment to Sam culminate in a sermon at the synagogue where she reconsiders leaving Sam behind.
Yet, fate intervenes as Jack’s men catch up with them, leading to a harrowing shootout. Despite Gypsy’s herculean effort to protect Sam, she is shot multiple times, prompting a flurry of emotions from the young boy. After a close call with death, Gypsy miraculously awakens in the hospital, determined to reclaim her life. Sam, now dutifully identifying himself as her son, has outsmarted Jack by cleverly redirecting the stolen funds to charity and saving millions for themselves.
As they drive away together in a new car, the pair revel in their newfound bond and sense of security, acknowledging that their lives may still be fraught with danger from Jack, but they are prepared to face whatever comes next, together.
