What year did Ed and Lorraine Warren take possession of the Annabelle doll?

Plot Summary

In 1971, renowned demonologists Ed (character) Warren and his wife Lorraine take possession of the notorious Annabelle doll, which had been terrorizing two nurses, Debbie and Camilla, in their apartment. The doll’s malevolent energy proves to be a formidable force as it summons dark forces to assault Ed during their drive home, but he miraculously survives. To contain its evil, they place Annabelle in a sacred glass case within their artifacts room and have Father Gordon bless it for safekeeping.

A year later, the Warrens welcome Mary Ellen into their home, tasking her with babysitting their daughter Judy while they embark on an overnight investigation elsewhere. As Judy navigates her daily routine at school, she begins to sense the presence of a mysterious priest who doggedly follows her. Meanwhile, Mary Ellen spends time shopping and socializing with her crush, Bob Palmeri, as well as preparing a birthday cake for Judy. However, their tranquil evening is disrupted by the uninvited arrival of Daniela, a friend of Mary Ellen’s who has recently lost her father.

Daniela’s curiosity about communicating with the dead leads her to explore the Warrens’ home and eventually gain access to the artifacts room. While searching for an artifact called the Mourner’s Bracelet, which she believes will allow her to connect with her late father, Daniela inadvertently leaves Annabelle’s glass case unlocked. This careless mistake sets off a chain reaction of terror as the supernatural forces begin to stir.

That night, the family is plagued by inexplicable events: knockings at the door, ghostly apparitions, and malevolent entities that seem to emanate from the artifacts room. The spirit of Bee Mullins appears to Mary Ellen, while Bob is attacked and chased by a hellhound. Meanwhile, Judy finds herself face-to-face with Annabelle in her bedroom. As tensions escalate, Daniela becomes trapped in the artifacts room, tormented by an onslaught of unsettling toys and an old television that eerily predicts the near future.

In the midst of this chaos, Bob musters the courage to ask Mary Ellen out on a date, only to be interrupted by another terrifying encounter with the hellhound. As the night wears on, it becomes clear that Annabelle’s evil has unleashed a maelstrom of malevolent forces, and the Warrens’ home has become a hotbed of supernatural activity.

As the television screen flickers back to life, a blood-soaked and terrified Daniela materializes before their very eyes - a grim harbinger of the horrors that have unfolded since she answered a mysterious phone call. Just as the real Daniela reaches to take the receiver, Judy and Mary Ellen burst in, driven by the relentless spirits that are hell-bent on claiming their souls. The trio barely escapes with their lives from the artifacts room, where Annabelle once again unleashes her malevolent wrath.

Undeterred, Judy explains that they must contain Annabelle within her glass case, allowing the other restless spirits to finally rest in peace. But before they can retrieve the doll, Daniela is beset by a dark and ancient force - the Bride - which animates her body and turns her against Mary Ellen. In a desperate bid to free their friend from the clutches of evil, Judy and Mary Ellen seek out the guidance of the priest’s spirit, who serves as Judy’s guardian angel. This unseen ally leads them to the doll, and with Ed’s recorded exorcism footage playing in the background, Daniela is finally freed from the Bride’s malevolent grasp.

As the trio regroups, they face yet another challenge: retrieving the key to Annabelle’s glass case. The demonic hands that emerge from the Feeley Meeley board game prove formidable foes, but our heroes persevere and ultimately secure the key. With Annabelle locked away once more, the disturbances cease, and the other spirits slumber peacefully.

The next morning, Ed and Lorraine return to find their friends shaken but triumphant. As the trio recounts their harrowing experiences, Daniela apologizes to Lorraine for her thoughtless actions - a move prompted by her own desire to connect with her late father. But Lorraine’s wisdom prevails, revealing that the message from beyond the grave was meant specifically for Daniela, returning the cherished photograph of her father that she had earlier inserted into the bracelet. With this revelation, the group reunites to celebrate Judy’s birthday in style, surrounded by her friends and a sense of hard-won closure.
