What does Baby suffer from due to his childhood accident?

Plot Summary

As a young boy, Baby (Ansel Elgort) was left with the perpetual hum of tinnitus after a fateful car accident claimed his parents’ lives. The constant ringing in his ears served as a reminder to drown out the silence by immersing himself in music on his iPods. As he navigated adolescence, Baby’s life veered off course, punctuated by an ill-fated attempt to steal a vehicle unknowingly owned by the cunning criminal mastermind “Doc” (Kevin Spacey). A chance encounter with Doc led to Baby being coerced into working for him as a getaway driver, ferrying crews of robbers assembled by the notorious crime lord. In between jobs, Baby found solace in crafting remixes from snippets of conversations he recorded, while also caring for his deaf foster father Joseph (CJ Jones). His life was turned upside down once again when he met Debora (Lily James), a charming waitress at a local diner, and the two began to kindle a romance.

As Baby’s supposed final job with Doc neared its conclusion, things took a turn for the worse. Trigger-happy Bats (Jamie Foxx), who had developed an instant dislike for Baby, opened fire on a security guard, escalating the situation further when an armed bystander gave chase. With Baby evading capture and the authorities hot on his heels, he decided to pay off his debt and bid farewell to his life of crime. Joseph’s words of wisdom convinced Baby to start anew as a pizza delivery driver, allowing him to continue dating Debora while leaving his troubled past behind. However, Doc appeared at a lavish dinner date with Debora, refusing to let Baby walk away without one final task: joining a heist crew and threatening to harm Debora if he refused. Reluctantly, Baby agreed to join the crew.

The latest heist targeted a lucrative source of funds: money orders from a post office. When Baby arrived at their hideout, he was taken aback by the unconventional crew assembled by Doc, comprising Buddy (Jon Hamm), Darling (Eiza González), and Bats - an irregularity that left Baby feeling uneasy. As the team attempted to procure illegal arms for the job, Bats’ trigger finger proved too quick, resulting in a bloody confrontation that would have far-reaching consequences. Following the botched heist, Bats forced Baby to stop at Debora’s diner, oblivious to the blossoming romance between them, and nearly took her life during a brazen hold-up.

As the repercussions of their botched deal unfold, Doc’s indignation boils over into a vehement attempt to call off the heist, but Baby’s persuasive power prevails, convincing Doc to press on. That night, under the cover of darkness, Baby tries to make a hasty exit, hoping to spirit away Debora and escape Atlanta. However, his plans are foiled when Buddy and Bats, suspicious of Baby’s recordings, confront him. Despite their accusations, Baby is able to clear his name by playing back the mix-tapes he had created with Doc and the crew.

Tension simmers as they proceed with the heist, which ultimately ends in tragedy. In a shocking turn of events, Bats takes the life of a security guard, prompting Baby’s revulsion and subsequent refusal to drive the getaway car. Enraged, Bats delivers a brutal blow, leaving Baby reeling. With calculated precision, Baby exacts revenge by using the stolen vehicle to impale and kill Bats. The surviving members of the crew make a desperate bid for freedom on foot as the authorities give chase.

The ensuing firefight claims another casualty - Darling’s life is cut short. Buddy’s anger and grief are palpable as he blames Baby for her death, vowing to exact vengeance. In a bold move, Baby commandeers another vehicle and makes his way to his apartment, where he prepares to evacuate Joseph. Leaving behind a trail of clues, including a recording asking the staff at a senior care home to care for Joseph and distribute his earnings from past heists, Baby sets out to rescue Debora.

His destination is Debora’s diner, where he finds Buddy waiting in ambush. A high-stakes showdown ensues as Baby dispatches Buddy with precision and flees with Debora just as the police close in. In a last-ditch effort to escape, they seek refuge from Doc, who initially refuses their plea for help, citing Baby’s role in ruining the heist. However, upon witnessing Baby’s genuine affection for Debora, Doc relents, providing them with the resources and directions needed to flee the country.

Their newfound freedom is short-lived as Buddy, fueled by a burning desire for revenge, sets his sights on Baby and Debora. In a tense confrontation that unfolds in a multi-story parking garage, Buddy corners Baby, firing his gun mere inches from Baby’s ears, temporarily rendering him deaf. Seizing the opportunity, Debora disarms Buddy with a crowbar, allowing Baby to exact final justice by shooting his nemesis, sending him plummeting to his death.

As the cityscape of Atlanta recedes into the distance, Baby and Debora find themselves face-to-face with a police roadblock, their escape route suddenly and dramatically curtailed. With tension running high, Debora prepares to take matters into her own hands, but it’s Baby who intervenes, insisting that she doesn’t belong in the world of crime and surrendering to the authorities. The consequences are severe: at his trial, a parade of characters, including Joseph (played by…), Debora herself, and the numerous individuals Baby has saved during his robberies, take the stand to vouch for his character. The jury delivers a verdict that is both harsh and just: 25 years in prison, with a parole hearing scheduled for 5 years’ time served. As Baby begins his long journey behind bars, he receives a series of postcards from Debora, her words filled with promise and devotion as she pledges to wait patiently for him.

Years pass, marked by the monotony of prison life. And then, the day arrives when Baby’s sentence is finally served. He steps out into the bright sunlight, blinking away the haze of incarceration. It’s a moment he had previously dreamed of, but never thought would become reality. And waiting for him on the other side of those bars is Debora, her presence a testament to the power of love and perseverance. As they lock eyes, the world around them melts away, leaving only the two of them, suspended in a sea of possibility. The kiss that follows is a moment of pure joy, a celebration of their enduring bond.
