Batman (1989) Quiz: Test your knowledge on the 1989 film Batman and its iconic characters and plot twists.

Who is the mayor of Gotham City in Batman (1989)?

Plot Summary

In a bid to quell the rising tide of crime in Gotham City ahead of its momentous bicentennial celebration, Mayor [character A (Billy Dee Williams)] and Police Commissioner James Gordon (Pat Hingle) are tasked by authority figures to boost police presence and crack down on criminal activity. Meanwhile, intrepid reporter Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl) and his photographer counterpart, Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger), begin to unravel the enigmatic tale of a mysterious vigilante known as “Batman”, who has been exacting justice on Gotham’s nefarious elements.

Carl Grissom (Jack Palance), the city’s most feared mob boss, finds himself entangled in a web of deceit when his mistress is revealed to be involved with his right-hand man, Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson). As Grissom seeks to eliminate any perceived threats to his empire, he enlists the aid of corrupt cop Max Eckhardt (William Hootkins) to orchestrate a setup that culminates in a botched raid at the Axis Chemicals plant. In the ensuing chaos, Napier dispatches Eckhardt and then finds himself pitted against Batman in a brutal struggle. As fate would have it, Napier is inadvertently precipitated into a vat of toxic waste, which appears to claim his life.

Unbeknownst to the people of Gotham, Batman is actually Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton), a billionaire industrialist whose youthful experiences were forever marred by witnessing his parents’ murder at the hands of a ruthless mugger. As Bruce navigates the social scene, he crosses paths with Vicki and finds himself smitten with her charm. Meanwhile, Napier, who has miraculously survived his ordeal, emerges from the shadows with a grotesque new visage - chalk-white skin, emerald-green hair, and a perpetual ruby-red grin. Consumed by his own reflection’s malevolent influence, he reinvents himself as “the Joker”, exacts revenge on Grissom, and seizes control of his criminal empire.

As the Joker’s reign of terror unfolds, he unleashes a deadly chemical known as “Smilex” into Gotham’s hygiene products, causing victims to succumb to uncontrollable laughter when used in specific combinations. He then sets his sights on the Gotham Museum of Art, where Vicki becomes the target of his sinister plot. Batman arrives just in time to foil the Joker’s plan and effect a daring rescue, before whisking Vicki away in the Batmobile. In a subsequent move, Batman shares crucial information about Smilex with Vicki, allowing her to sound the alarm through Gotham’s newspapers and warn the city about the tainted products.

As Bruce Wayne sits down with Vicki in her apartment, poised to reveal his dual identity as the Caped Crusader, their intimate moment is brutally interrupted by the Joker’s maniacal laughter. The Clown Prince of Crime appears, his eyes gleaming with malevolent intent, and poses a chilling query: “Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?” before unleashing a bullet that finds its mark in Bruce’s armor-clad chest. Miraculously, the Dark Knight emerges unscathed, his mind reeling as he recalls the haunting words spoken by the man who murdered his parents. The truth begins to dawn: the Joker is responsible for the tragic event that scarred Bruce’s youth.

Meanwhile, Vicki mysteriously materializes in the Batcave, courtesy of Alfred Pennyworth’s discreet assistance. As Bruce struggles to reconcile his dual identities, he finds himself drawn back into the shadows, determined to vanquish evil and protect the innocent. With Batman’s iconic theme echoing through the night air, our hero sets his sights on the Axis Chemical plant, hell-bent on dismantling the Joker’s latest scheme.

In a diabolical twist, the Joker lures Gotham’s citizens to a nighttime parade, promising a windfall of $20 million in cash. However, as the unsuspecting throng gathers, he unleashes a toxic torrent of Smilex gas from his seemingly innocuous parade balloons. Batman springs into action, soaring through the skies in the Batwing and saving the city from certain doom.

As the dust settles, Vicki finds herself in the clutches of her captor, being whisked away to the rooftop of a decrepit cathedral. It is here that Batman finally corners the Joker, their primal struggle unfolding as they engage in a no-holds-barred battle. When the Clown Prince of Crime attempts a daring escape via helicopter, Batman seizes the opportunity to exact his revenge, latching onto the Joker’s leg and ensnaring it to a heavy stone sculpture. As the villain plummets to his demise, Commissioner Gordon and Harvey Dent unite in a symbol of hope, with the Bat-Signal shining bright as a beacon of justice, promising that Batman will forever stand vigilant, defending Gotham from the shadows.
