What university does Melanie want to attend?

Plot Summary

As Melanie Porter readies herself for graduation and sets her sights on Georgetown University, her father James, the chief of police in their quiet Chicago suburb, becomes increasingly overprotective of his family. He has grand plans for his 17-year-old daughter’s future, insisting that she attend Northwestern University, a mere 28-minute drive from home. This decision is met with resistance from Melanie herself, as well as her mother Michelle, the family’s real estate agent, and even their mischievous pig Albert, who seems to have a peculiar knack for annoying James at every turn. Meanwhile, young Trey, Melanie’s sibling, can often be found indulging in quality time with the pesky pig.

As Melanie prepares to take her talents on the road, she receives an unexpected invitation to interview at Georgetown after impressing college recruiters with her impressive performance at a mock trial. Her closest friends, Nancy and Katie, offer to join her on a road trip adventure to Pittsburgh, but just as Melanie is about to embark on this new journey, her father springs a surprise of his own - a road trip to Washington D.C.

Along the way, Melanie reluctantly agrees to take a tour at Northwestern, where she encounters an overly enthusiastic father-daughter duo, Doug and Wendy, who are embarking on their own adventure. Unbeknownst to Melanie, her father has orchestrated a series of actors to be stationed throughout the campus, each designed to sway her decision in his favor. One particularly convincing individual claims to have lost an eye at Georgetown, nearly sending Melanie down a rabbit hole of uncertainty. However, when another actor refers to James as “a pretty smart guy,” Melanie begins to see through the ruse, realizing that she’s not just fighting for her education - but also her independence.

As the Porters’ vehicle sputters to a halt, James (actor name) and his family uncover an unexpected package - Trey - stashed away in the trunk alongside Albert. The quartet seeks refuge at a nearby hotel, courtesy of Albert’s navigational expertise, but their respite is short-lived as Albert’s caffeine-fueled hyperactivity leads to chaos, culminating in the destruction of a wedding celebration. In the aftermath, James and Melanie receive an offer from Doug (actor name) and Wendy to share a ride, as James’ own vehicle has succumbed to mechanical woes.

Melanie and her father attempt to reconcile their differences during a tour bus excursion, but things take a dramatic turn when Nancy and Katie intervene, whisking Melanie away to a sorority house. Meanwhile, James, misinformed about the situation, decides to sneak into the residence, only to be thwarted by the owner’s refusal to grant him entry. As he learns of his daughter’s unwavering trust in him, James resolves to leave the premises the following morning, but fate has other plans. After Melanie’s departure, James is caught and subjected to a brutal tasing before being arrested by the homeowner.

James’ mother arrives to post bail, offering a stern rebuke for her son’s overprotectiveness while sharing tales of her own past fears when he enlisted in the Army. Despite this, she remains steadfast in her faith in her son’s ability to forge his own path. James and Melanie eventually find closure at an airport, where they prepare to take their leap of faith - literally, as they embark on a skydiving adventure bound for Georgetown.

Upon landing safely, they encounter the vengeful father of the bride, who pursues them in golf carts, fueled by a desire for revenge against those responsible for ruining his daughter’s special day. With James’ guidance, Melanie learns to shake off her fears and face her doubts head-on.

As Thanksgiving approaches, Melanie returns home with her parents, where she reunites with Doug (actor name) and Wendy, who is now preparing to embark on her own collegiate journey. The evening takes a dramatic turn when Melanie introduces her friend Tracy, a male, sending James into a state of restrained ire. Later that night, Wendy reveals her plans to marry Scooter, prompting Doug’s explosive reaction as he tackles the young man, leaving everyone in shock.
