As Melanie Porter gears up for her graduation, she has her eyes set on Georgetown University. However, her father, James - the chief of police in their tranquil Chicago neighborhood - becomes increasingly protective of his daughter. He has ambitious plans for Melanie, insisting she should attend Northwestern University, conveniently located just a 28-minute drive away from home. This decision faces backlash from both Melanie and her mother Michelle, a real estate agent, as well as their mischievous pig, Albert, who seems to revel in annoying James at every opportunity. Meanwhile, Trey, Melanie’s younger sibling, finds joy in spending time with the troublesome pig.
As Melanie prepares to showcase her talents, unexpectedly, she receives an invitation to interview at Georgetown, catching the attention of college recruiters thanks to her performance at a mock trial. Her loyal friends, Nancy and Katie, jump at the chance to join her for an adventurous road trip to Pittsburgh. Just when Melanie is about to embark on this exciting journey, her father surprises her with his own plan - a road trip to Washington D.C..
During the trip, Melanie reluctantly agrees to tour Northwestern, where she encounters an enthusiastic father-daughter pair, Doug and Wendy, who are also on their own adventure. Unbeknownst to Melanie, James has arranged for a series of actors to be positioned on campus, all aiming to sway her decision towards Northwestern. One overly convincing actor claims to have lost an eye at Georgetown, sending Melanie into a whirlpool of doubt. Yet, when another actor slickly states that James is “a pretty smart guy,” Melanie begins to pierce through the facade, realizing she is not just battling for her educational future but also for her independence.
As the family vehicle breaks down, they discover an unexpected stowaway – Trey, hidden in the trunk alongside Albert. Seeking refuge at a nearby hotel, courtesy of Albert’s unexpected navigational skills, their short-lived respite descends into a frenzy as Albert’s caffeine-fueled antics results in the chaos of a wedding celebration. Amidst the turmoil, James and Melanie receive an offer from Doug and Wendy to share a ride since their vehicle is out of commission.
In an attempt to reconcile their differences during a tour bus ride, tensions escalate when Nancy and Katie whisk Melanie away to a sorority house. Misunderstanding the situation, James tries to sneak into the residence but is blocked by the owner’s refusal. Coming to terms with his daughter’s unwavering trust in him, James vows to leave, but fate intervenes. After Melanie departs, James is caught and shockingly tased, landing him in handcuffs courtesy of the homeowner.
James’ mother arrives to bail him out, reproaching him for his excessive protectiveness while recalling her own nervous moments when he joined the Army. Regardless, she continues to believe in his capacity to chart his own course. Eventually, James and Melanie connect at the airport, ready to take a leap of faith, quite literally, as they embark on a skydiving adventure destined for Georgetown.
Post-landing, they come face-to-face with the furious father of the bride, who pursues them in golf carts, driven by a thirst for revenge over the ruined nuptials. Under James’ guidance, Melanie learns to cast aside her fears and confront her doubts head-on.
As Thanksgiving draws near, Melanie returns home where she reunites with Doug and Wendy, both of whom are now contemplating their own collegiate journeys. An unexpected twist occurs when Melanie introduces her friend Tracy, a male, which sends James into a restrained rage. Later that evening, Wendy drops the bombshell about her plans to marry Scooter, triggering a dramatic response from Doug as he tackles the young man, leaving everyone in stunned silence.
