Who is Dora's monkey companion?

Plot Summary

In the lush Peruvian jungle, young adventurer Dora (Isabela Mone) spends her days embarking on thrilling escapades with her loyal monkey companion Boots and her cousin Diego (Jeff Wahlberg). As the daughter of renowned explorers Cole (Michael Pena) and Elena (Eva Longoria), Dora’s sense of wonder is fueled by her parents’ stories of hidden treasures and ancient civilizations. When Diego leaves to join his family in Los Angeles, Dora remains behind with her parents, who are driven by a centuries-old legend to uncover the fabled Inca city of Parapata, said to be filled with more gold than the rest of the world combined.

Ten years pass, and Cole and Elena finally decipher the location of Parapata based on an artifact discovered by Dora during one of her jungle treks. However, they decide to send Dora to Diego’s school in LA while they embark on their perilous journey, citing that she’s not yet ready to face the dangers that come with exploring. As a precautionary measure, Elena cautions Dora about the perils of city life, including rave parties and other potential hazards.

Upon arriving at Diego’s family home, Dora meets his aunt Sabrina (Pia Miller) and uncle Nico (Joey Vieira), as well as his classmates Sammy (Madeleine Madden), the intelligent and ambitious class president, and Randy (Nicholas Coombe), a gentle soul with a passion for astronomy who is often bullied. Despite her enthusiasm, Dora’s unique upbringing and mannerisms make it challenging for her to connect with her new peers.

As she stays in touch with her parents over a satellite phone, Dora becomes increasingly concerned when they suddenly lose contact. Meanwhile, Diego struggles to comprehend Dora’s hyperactive nature and eccentric behavior, which culminates in her public display of dancing at the school dance. The ridicule she faces from her classmates only exacerbates the tension between her and Diego, leading to a rift in their relationship.

As Dora navigates this unfamiliar world, she finds solace in her jungle survival kit and satellite phone, keeping a lifeline open to her parents as they venture deeper into the unknown, driven by their quest for Parapata.

As the group of friends, including Dora (voiced by Isabela Moner), Sammy, Randy, and Diego, embark on a class field trip to a museum, they find themselves lured into the off-exhibit archives by mysterious forces. The unsuspecting teens are then captured by mercenaries led by Powell (Temuera Morrison) and transported to Peru in a cargo plane’s hidden compartment.

Their journey takes an unexpected turn when Alejandro (Eugenio Derbez), a seemingly trustworthy ally, helps them escape from the crate and Powell’s henchmen. However, the group soon realizes that their map has been stolen by the mercenaries, aided by the cunning Swiper (Benicio Del Toro). Alejandro reveals that Dora’s parents have gone missing, and the mercenaries are desperate to get their hands on Parapata’s treasures.

With a burning desire to find her parents first, Dora resolves to embark on an adventure with Alejandro’s guidance. Her friends, including Sammy, Randy, and Diego, join forces in hopes of being rescued from the treacherous jungle. As they delve deeper into the dense foliage, Dora picks up her parent’s trail, leaving clues behind as they venture further into the unknown.

Their journey takes them to an abandoned campsite, where Dora is reunited with her trusty companion Boots. However, not everyone shares Dora’s enthusiasm for the adventure. Sammy struggles to cope with the harsh jungle environment, while Randy’s fear of unseen dangers proves to be a constant worry. Diego comforts Dora, offering words of encouragement as she navigates uncharted territory.

As they navigate through the dense underbrush, the group encounters numerous obstacles, including rolling logs, treacherous quicksand (which Dora expertly knows how to escape without external help), Inca ruin puzzles, and fierce attacks from Parapata’s forest guards. Along the way, they meet a wise old woman (Isela Vega) who warns them of the jungle’s deadly allure: anyone seeking Parapata is cursed.

Despite the risks, Sammy and Randy decide to stand by Dora’s side when Diego refuses to abandon her in the unforgiving jungle. Together, they press on, driven by their determination to find Dora’s parents and uncover the secrets of Parapata.

As Dora finally reaches the outskirts of Parapata, she is met with a stunning betrayal by Alejandro, who reveals his true allegiance to the mercenaries. Seizing the opportunity, he captures not only Dora’s parents but also the entire group of teenagers, leaving them at the mercy of their captors. However, Boots, the quick-witted monkey (Danny Trejo), springs into action and masterfully orchestrates an escape for the teens, setting them free to continue their perilous journey.

Undeterred by their recent ordeal, the group decides to infiltrate Parapata in a bid to secure treasure that can be used as leverage to secure Elena and Cole’s release. With Dora’s parents still imprisoned, the teens embark on a treacherous adventure within the hidden city, navigating its ancient temples, avoiding deadly traps, and solving intricate puzzles that lead them to the sacred center shrine.

As they approach the heart of Parapata, Alejandro reappears, determined to claim the central idol for himself. However, his plan is foiled when he falls prey to a cleverly designed trap, rendering him powerless. The soldiers guarding Parapata, led by their enigmatic queen (Q’Orianka Kilcher), arrive on the scene and confront the mercenaries, ultimately defeating them in a fierce battle.

In the aftermath, Dora takes the opportunity to communicate with the Inca soldiers in Quechua, assuring them that her friends had only come for her parents’ safe return and to learn about Parapata’s ancient culture. Impressed by their sincerity, the Inca permit the group, including Dora’s family, to depart, offering a glimpse of their most treasured relic: an awe-inspiring golden idol of a monkey.

Upon their return to Dora’s jungle home, her parents share their thrilling experiences with the teens, and the prospect of embarking on another expedition together as a family sparks their enthusiasm. However, Dora decides that her education in Los Angeles takes precedence, and she bids farewell to her friends. As the group celebrates their shared adventure at a lively party, Alejandro and his mercenaries languish in Parapata’s prisons, their schemes foiled and their ambitions dashed.
