Who leads the Zombie Unit in the film?

Plot Summary

As the sun beats down on the dusty El Paso airport, a peculiar assembly of U.S. Army sergeants converges upon Major Paul Hackett, leader of the enigmatic Zombie Unit. This motley crew, comprised of Sergeants Larry McRose, Buckman Atwater, Charles Biddle, Declan Coker, and Luther Fry, is rumored to be composed of soldiers reported KIA, yet mysteriously reassigned to Hackett for a clandestine mission of utmost importance.

Meanwhile, in the arid landscape of West Texas, Jack Benteen, a tenacious Texas Ranger, finds himself at odds with his former high school chum, Cash Bailey, now a ruthless drug trafficker operating out of Mexico. When Bailey attempts to bribe Benteen to turn a blind eye to his illegal activities, the lawman’s refusal sparks a chilling warning: “Look the other way, or die trying.”

As Benteen navigates this treacherous landscape, he finds himself ambushed by Bailey’s goons at a desolate gas station on the outskirts of town. The ensuing firefight claims the life of his friend and Sheriff Hank Pearson (Rip Torn), leaving Benteen to realize that Bailey has orchestrated their demise. Unbeknownst to him, Hackett and McRose have been watching the carnage unfold from a distance.

Two of Bailey’s henchmen attempt to commandeer the Zombie Unit’s vehicle, only to meet their maker in a hail of gunfire. As the dust settles, the Zombie Unit sets its sights on Bailey, tracking them back to their hometown. A botched bank heist inadvertently foils their escape plan, resulting in Fry’s untimely demise and the capture of Atwater and Coker by Benteen.

As the truth begins to unravel, Benteen discovers that the soldiers were actually attempting to pilfer Bailey’s ill-gotten gains and a safety deposit box containing incriminating records. Confronted by Hackett at his doorstep, Benteen joins forces with the Zombie Unit, crossing the border into Mexico to bring Bailey’s reign of terror to an end.

At Bailey’s foreboding hacienda, they are joined by Sarita (María Conchita Alonso), Benteen’s former lover and a woman who once belonged to Bailey. Having followed her man into Mexico, she brings with her a deep understanding of the treacherous landscape they must navigate.

As the Independence Day festivities reach a fever pitch, Benteen (character name) confronts Bailey at the celebration, mere moments before his comrades prepare to unleash a brutal assault on Bailey’s private army. Meanwhile, Hackett, seemingly hell-bent on destruction, is caught red-handed by McRose (actor’s name), having just committed a senseless murder - that of Bailey’s accountant. As the truth begins to unravel like a thread pulled from a tapestry, it becomes clear that there never was a legitimate mission; instead, Hackett, revealed as Bailey’s partner in crime, had orchestrated the demise of every soldier under his command. The very fabric of trust has been shredded, leaving only chaos and devastation in its wake.

In the midst of this maelstrom, Atwater (actor’s name) warns Benteen of Hackett’s orders to take him out with extreme prejudice, urging him to strike out on his own for survival. As the town erupts into a cacophony of gunfire, McRose and Biddle join forces in a dogged pursuit of Hackett, while Benteen and Sarita make their escape in a Jeep, desperate to outrun the carnage. The body count continues to rise, as Atwater and Coker succumb to the relentless onslaught of bullets, their final moments marked by a futile struggle against Bailey’s ruthless henchmen.

In the aftermath of this blood-soaked chaos, Hackett ultimately meets his demise at the hands of McRose and Biddle. The latter, however, is swiftly dispatched by one of Bailey’s loyalists, Monday, only to be met with a hail of gunfire from McRose, whose own mortality soon becomes apparent as he falls prey to Bailey’s remaining forces.

As the dust settles on this war-torn landscape, Benteen and Bailey engage in a bitter duel, with Benteen pleading for his adversary to surrender. Refused, Bailey fires first, only to find himself brought down by Benteen’s swift retaliation. In the aftermath of this deadly confrontation, Benteen strikes a Faustian bargain with Lupo, Bailey’s trusted right-hand man, allowing him to claim dominion over the local drug trade in exchange for safe passage out of Mexico with Sarita. As they disappear into the uncertain future, Lupo issues a solemn warning: that someday, Benteen will be expected to return the favor, setting the stage for an uneasy alliance between these two former enemies.
