Christian Grey, portrayed by Jamie Dornan, grapples with haunting nightmares stemming from the abuse he faced in his childhood after his breakup with his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Anastasia “Ana” Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, begins her new role as an assistant to Jack Hyde, an editor at Seattle Independent Publishing, who seems to have more than just a professional interest in her.

One evening, Ana attends an art gallery showcasing the work of José Rodriguez, played by Victor Rasuk, and is startled to see Christian there. Despite her initial hesitation, she consents to dinner with him. During the meal, Christian expresses his desire to rekindle their relationship, but Ana is wary of his penchant for pain. He assures her that he has changed, promising to adhere to her conditions of no rules and no punishments if they resume their romance. She ultimately agrees.

Days later, Ana encounters a woman who looks strikingly similar to her, creating an unsettling atmosphere. Following this, Ana goes out with Jack to a local bar, only for Christian to arrive and swiftly whisk Ana away, warning her of Jack’s obvious intentions. He also hints that his company is looking to acquire SIP, where Ana works.

While enjoying breakfast with Christian, Ana spots the same woman, and when she queries Christian about her, he hesitates before finally revealing that the woman is Leila Williams, played by Bella Heathcote, a former submissive of his. Christian recounts that after their contractual obligations ended, Leila sought a deeper connection, which he wasn’t willing to provide. Following her marriage and subsequent loss, she has struggled with her mental health and has been stalking the couple.

Christian later invites Ana to a masquerade ball at his adoptive parents’ estate. He takes her to a beauty salon named Esclava, where she is infuriated to encounter Elena Lincoln, played by Kim Basinger, Christian’s previous dominant who introduced him to BDSM. At the ball, Ana uncovers dark truths about Christian’s past, including his expulsion from multiple schools for fighting and the painful history surrounding his birth mother. When Elena confronts Ana, demanding she end her relationship with Christian, Ana firmly stands her ground. Upon returning home, they find that Leila has vandalized Ana’s car.

In the following days, the conflict escalates when Jack tries to seduce Ana at the SIP office. Although she manages to escape, Christian discovers the incident and promptly ensures Jack’s removal from SIP by appealing to the CEO. He then asks Ana to move in with him, which she ultimately accepts after some contemplation. The day after, she is offered a temporary position as acting editor.

During a visit to her apartment to collect her belongings, Ana faces a terrifying encounter with Leila, who threatens her with a gun. After Leila discharges a round into a wall, Christian and his bodyguard Jason Taylor, played by Max Martini, arrive just in time to subdue her. Recognizing Christian’s need for control, Ana chooses to leave, returning home late that night. Christian, feeling the strain of her departure, shows vulnerability, kneeling before her and expressing a need for her. When she brings him back, their passionate reunion leads to intimacy. However, Ana is disturbed by his nightmares and, upon waking, finds herself faced with a marriage proposal from him, albeit wishing for more time to ponder her answer.

In the following days, after Christian’s helicopter faces an emergency landing due to a mechanical failure, both Ana and Christian’s family await news anxiously. When he surfaces unharmed, Ana realizes the depths of her love for him and accepts his proposal.

At Christian’s birthday celebration, the tension escalates when Elena makes an appearance. The announcement of their engagement provokes her ire, leading to a heated exchange where Ana stands up to her, declaring her intent to protect her relationship with Christian. Observing the commotion, Christian asserts that Elena’s teachings were limited to physical intimacy and not love, leading to his mother Grace slapping Elena and demanding her exit. With this definitive break, Christian reaffirms his commitment to Ana, culminating in a romantic proposal at the boathouse, which she joyfully accepts. As fireworks light up the night sky, Jack watches from a distance, hinting at potential conflicts ahead.
