In the heart of Vancouver's suburban landscape, 21st-century life unfolds through the eyes of Flora Belle Buckman, a self-proclaimed skeptic who finds solace in comic books. As she navigates the complexities of her parents' recent divorce, her world is suddenly disrupted by a chaotic sequence of events triggered by a hapless neighbor running over a squirrel with his vacuum cleaner - a gift intended for his wife's birthday. The impromptu encounter imbues the squirrel with extraordinary abilities, allowing him to grasp human emotions and intellect. Flora, intrigued by this transformation, dubs the squirrel Ulysses in honor of the fateful vacuum cleaner mishap.

As Ulysses begins to exhibit these newfound powers, Flora encourages him to use his gifts for good, rationalizing that he could right wrongs, challenge injustices, or simply offer poetic insight. Enthralled by his creative potential, Flora is astonished when Ulysses demonstrates an affinity for writing poetry on her mother's typewriter.

However, a confrontational exchange between Flora and her mother escalates into a shouting match, during which Flora becomes convinced that her mother no longer loves her. Feeling wounded and disillusioned, Flora declares her intention to live with her father, prompting Ulysses to compose a poignant poem that reveals the genuine emotions underlying their complex relationships.

In a daring move, Ulysses escapes from Flora's mother, leaving her to read his heartfelt words. As Flora assembles a team of allies to rescue her beloved squirrel, they converge on her father's apartment building, where the boundaries of Flora's cynical exterior are irreparably shattered. The realization that her mother truly loves her marks a profound transformation, forever changing the trajectory of Flora's life and relationships.
