What profession does Calvin Weir-Fields have?

Plot Summary

Calvin Weir-Fields (played by), a literary genius whose initial success was tempered by his inability to form meaningful connections or craft a new manuscript, receives an unorthodox prescription from his therapist: to write about someone who shares a profound affinity for his canine companion, Scotty. This peculiar prompt sparks a vivid dream in which Calvin encounters a woman named Ruby Sparks, and before he knows it, his fingers are dancing across the typewriter keys as he pours out his heart onto the page.

As if conjured from thin air, Calvin discovers Ruby’s personal belongings scattered throughout his home, leaving his brother Harry (played by) and sister-in-law Susie (played by) in a state of bewilderment. Harry, ever the skeptic, dismisses Calvin’s literary endeavors as overly idealized and fantastical, but Calvin is undeterred, weaving a narrative that defies reality.

One fateful evening, as Calvin’s fingers flutter across the typewriter keys, he falls asleep with Ruby’s story still unfolding in his mind. The next morning, he awakens to find himself surrounded by the very people, places, and things he had described just hours before. And then, there she is – Ruby Sparks (played by), a living, breathing embodiment of his imagination, who believes they are embarking on a romantic adventure together.

As Calvin’s reality blurs with fantasy, he finds himself torn between his growing affection for Ruby and the crushing weight of responsibility that comes with having created her. In a desperate bid to prove her existence to Harry, Calvin invites Ruby along as he meets Mabel (played by), a devoted fan who has been following his work from afar. But when Ruby confronts them, her presence proves all too real, leaving Calvin stunned and unsure how to navigate this surreal landscape.

With Ruby firmly entrenched in his life, Calvin becomes increasingly consumed by their relationship, introducing her to his incredulous brother and mother Gertrude (played by), who is now dating the charismatic Mort (played by). As Ruby’s infectious vitality begins to fade, Calvin’s own gloominess grows, threatening to suffocate their bond.

In a desperate attempt to salvage their connection, Ruby suggests they spend less time together, but Calvin fears her departure more than ever. In response, he writes that she is miserable without him, and Ruby returns, her clinginess now palpable. Tired of this cycle, Calvin crafts a new narrative where Ruby is perpetually happy, but at the cost of his own well-being.

In this precarious dance between reality and fantasy, Calvin must confront the darker aspects of his imagination, lest he lose himself – and Ruby – forever in the labyrinthine corridors of his own mind.

As Calvin pours out his heart to Harry, his attempts to resurrect Ruby to her former self only result in confusion and another heated exchange between the two. Desperate to lift Ruby’s spirits, Calvin invites her to a soiree hosted by Langdon Tharp, his esteemed mentor, where she is persuaded to join him for a midnight dip in the pool. However, when Calvin discovers his ex-girlfriend Lila mingling at the party, he becomes increasingly withdrawn, prompting Ruby to accuse him of being emotionally unavailable to anyone outside his own inner world.

The tension between them reaches a boiling point as Langdon’s flirtatious advances towards Ruby only serve to further ignite her frustration. Calvin’s possessiveness eventually boils over into a desperate attempt to control Ruby, forcing her to perform increasingly absurd and humiliating acts that leave her shattered. As she collapses from exhaustion, Calvin’s attempts at reconciliation are met with a resolute refusal, and Ruby retreats to his room, slamming the door shut behind her.

Consumed by shame and regret, Calvin scribbles a final passage into his manuscript, proclaiming Ruby’s freedom once she departs from his life. He leaves the document outside her door with a heartfelt note expressing his love for her, but it’s too late – Ruby has vanished, leaving behind only the echoes of their tumultuous relationship.

Months later, Harry suggests that Calvin channel his experiences with Ruby into a new novel, and The Girlfriend becomes an instant bestseller. As Calvin strolls through the park with Scotty by his side, he catches sight of a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Ruby, engrossed in his latest work. When their eyes meet, she teases him about their shared history, prompting Calvin to deflect her advances by flashing his author’s photo. She playfully suggests they start anew, urging him not to reveal the ending, to which he obliges with a reassuring promise: “I promise.”
