Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg), London's most illustrious constable, reigns supreme in terms of arrest record and skillset, rendering his colleagues envious but inferior. This disparity prompts a forced promotion to Sandford, a rural idyll boasting the nation's lowest crime rate, where Nick is expected to excel despite the absence of challenge. Upon arrival, he finds the village living up to its tranquil reputation, much to his dismay. His first night on the job is marked by a high-profile bust of underage drinkers at the local pub, resulting in arrests for disorderly conduct. Among those apprehended is Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), an amiable and endearing colleague whose father, Frank (Jim Broadbent), happens to be Sandford's chief of police. Nick soon meets his new colleagues, a affable but unremarkable bunch, with the exception of Andy's (Paddy Considine and Rafe Spall) smug demeanor, which sets him apart. The only other individuals passionate about upholding the law are the zealous Neighbourhood Watch Alliance, a group of long-time residents dedicated to preserving Sandford's reputation as the nation's top village, and concerned about the influx of street performers and other urban ills.

As Nick settles into his new role, his most thrilling moments involve chasing a wayward swan, apprehending a shoplifter, confiscating an arsenal from a local farmer, and pulling over a speeding solicitor (accompanied by his significantly younger girlfriend) en route to perform in their cringe-worthy, Shakespeare-inspired Romeo and Juliet adaptation. The pair's tragic demise at the hands of a hatchet-wielding assailant, dressed in dark attire, raises Nick's suspicions when their bodies are discovered strewn across the road, with their car wreckage staged to make their deaths appear as a gruesome traffic accident. While his colleagues accept the official explanation, Nick remains troubled by the lack of skid marks at the scene, sensing that something more sinister lies beneath the surface.

As Nicholas and Danny receive intel about a clandestine cache of illicit weapons stashed outside the city, they mobilize their entire crew, including Saxon's enigmatic trainer, to investigate the rural farmhouse. Upon arrival, they're met by the farm's proprietor, who, fluent in the language of canines, effortlessly communicates with Sgt. Angel as he showcases an arsenal of impressive proportions. Nicholas is left aghast at the sheer magnitude and illegality of the stash, which is subsequently seized by the officers. To commemorate their successful haul, Danny invites Nicholas to join him for an evening at the local pub, where they indulge in several rounds of lager. With their inhibitions suitably lowered, they escort local businessman George Merchant back to his estate, after which they retreat to Danny's abode to unwind and indulge in a DVD marathon featuring Point Break and Bad Boys II.

As the night wears on, another "accident" unfolds, this time involving George Merchant's posh estate, whose rustic charm is disrupted by the incident. The next day, Nicholas and Danny are summoned to the scene of yet another catastrophe – George Merchant has met his demise in a blaze of glory, with a bacon and beans-covered explosion serving as the apparent cause. However, Nicholas remains unconvinced, recognizing the telltale signs of murder. Back at the station, he and Danny work tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to George's death, but their theory that it was a premeditated killing falls on deaf ears among their colleagues.

The tranquility of a Saturday town fair is shattered when Nicholas, burdened with security duties, finds himself face-to-face with Danny's insistent desire to witness his sharp shooting skills during a high-stakes game. The prize: a cuddly monkey that becomes an unlikely companion for Nicholas. Meanwhile, the air is filled with excitement as a local lottery promises tantalizing rewards, and Tim Messenger, a reporter, approaches Nicholas with an air of confidentiality. His whispered words are interrupted by Leslie Tiller's solemn tone, prompting Messenger to urge Nicholas to meet him behind the church at 3:00 PM. As fate would have it, the clock strikes three, and Nicholas rushes to the predetermined location only to find that it's too late – Tim Messenger lies decapitated beneath a fallen church roof section, with Frank's hasty declaration of accidental death leaving Nicholas with an unsettling sense of unease.

Her tale of woe and betrayal reveals her land being sold to a city developer, with Skinner's involvement in the property deal. Just as Nicholas steps outside to collect his thoughts, the dark-cloaked figure strikes, plunging the woman into a fatal silence. In hot pursuit, Nicholas is thwarted by the villain's cunning escape, leaving him with only a wounded suspect and a burning desire for justice. Convinced that Skinner's motives are rooted in the murders, Nicholas marshals his department to confront the store owner. However, Skinner emerges unscathed, his alibi reinforced by surveillance tapes revealing his presence throughout the day – a chilling reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and the truth is often hidden beneath a veil of innocence.

As Nick's initial theory of a lone murderer crumbles, he finds himself face to face with a sinister coalition: Skinner's employees, donning dark cloaks, have been working together to eliminate Sandford's perceived threats to its esteemed reputation. The revelation strikes when Nick, in his hotel room, engages in hand-to-hand combat with one such operative and emerges victorious. Seizing the opportunity to infiltrate their ranks, Nick assumes the identity of the defeated assassin and receives a chilling confirmation from Skinner himself that the murders are indeed orchestrated by the Neighborhood Watch Alliance (NWA). This cabal of vigilantes, driven by an irrational obsession for civic pride, has taken it upon themselves to eradicate anyone they deem detrimental to Sandford's status as the nation's best village. The motives behind their gruesome killings are as absurd as they are twisted: a solicitor and his girlfriend were silenced for their atrocious acting skills, which had brought shame to Sandford's theater company; a businessman met his demise for owning an eyesore of a home; a journalist was eliminated for the heinous crime of poor spelling; and a horticulturalist was brutally murdered for daring to consider leaving town. Nick's attempts to apprehend the NWA are thwarted by Frank and Danny, who rally in support of their vigilante brethren. As Nick flees through the castle grounds, he stumbles upon the gruesome remains of previous victims, only to find himself surrounded by the NWA and brutally stabbed by Danny. The seemingly lifeless Nick is whisked away in the boot of Danny's car, but in a shocking twist, it is revealed that his "death" was merely a ruse, concocted using ketchup packets and his notebook to avoid any actual harm.

With his cover blown, Danny refuses to believe that his father and the NWA are responsible for murder and persuades Nick to flee Sandford and return to London. Once in the city, Nick finds solace in a collection of action films and becomes inspired to put an end to the NWA's reign of terror. Gathering an arsenal from the police evidence room, he returns to Sandford, determined to confront the vigilantes head-on. The ensuing battle is intense, with Nick facing off against numerous NWA members in the town square. Although outnumbered and outgunned, Nick emerges victorious thanks to the timely intervention of Danny, who had been struggling to reconcile his father's involvement in the murders.

In the heartwarming local pub, where camaraderie flows like a fine ale, Frank and his fellow constables, clad in riot gear, encircle Nick and Danny. However, Nick's persuasive nature prevails, convincing the officers that he is indeed in the right. Frustration gets the better of Frank, and he beats a hasty retreat. Nick and the other officers then head to the nearby supermarket to apprehend Skinner, but when his employees mount a spirited resistance, Skinner manages to slip away with Frank's help. Undeterred, Danny and Nick give chase in their trusty police car, only to stumble upon an unexpected encounter - a runaway swan that had been causing trouble in Sandford. Skinner and Frank are compelled to abandon their vehicle, allowing Nick and Danny to pursue them on foot. The action culminates in a thrilling fight between Nick and Skinner within a meticulously crafted scale replica of the village, with Nick emerging victorious when Skinner takes an impromptu tumble and impales his chin on a miniature church model. Miraculously, Skinner survives this gruesome mishap. Meanwhile, Frank attempts to make a break for it in Nick and Danny's police car but ultimately ends up crashing into a tree after the swan makes its presence felt.

As news of Sandford's idyllic state spreads, Nick's former London superiors pay a visit to congratulate him on his exemplary work and extend an invitation for him to return. However, Nick declines, having grown deeply fond of his new friends and finally found joy in life amidst the quaint charm of Sandford. Little does he know, however, that his peaceful existence is about to be disrupted by one final test of loyalty. At the station, a lone member of the NWA makes a desperate attempt to eliminate Nick once and for all. Danny takes the full force of the gun blast, and in the ensuing chaos, the sea mine is detonated, reducing the station house to rubble.

In a surprising twist, no one loses their life in the mayhem. Instead, Danny is promoted to Sergeant, while Nick assumes his rightful place as Inspector. As they continue to patrol the streets of Sandford together, Nick and Danny draw inspiration from Marcus and Mike, two legendary law enforcement officers from the world-renowned Bad Boys franchise. With their bond stronger than ever, they face the future with a renewed sense of purpose and camaraderie.
