Martin Lowery, a dedicated scientist, is dispatched to a government-controlled research outpost amidst an unspecified pandemic that has devastated the nation. Nestled in an unusually fertile forest near Bristol, this outpost serves as the location for studies conducted by his former partner and ex-lover, Olivia Wendle, who is investigating the use of mycorrhiza to enhance crop yields. After successfully passing his physical examination and meeting his park guide, Alma, Martin is intrigued to learn about the local folklore surrounding Parnag Fegg, a legendary woodland spirit.

As dawn breaks, Martin and Alma embark on a two-day trek to reach Olivia’s research site. However, Alma reveals a disconcerting truth: Olivia has not been in contact for several months. Their journey takes a sinister turn when they stumble upon an abandoned tent, which shows signs it belonged to a family. Later that night, Martin discovers a troubling rash on his arm before both he and Alma are unexpectedly attacked by masked assailants who ransack their camp, vandalize their equipment, and steal their shoes. In a desperate bid to escape, Martin injures his foot.

Their luck seems to change when they are approached by Zach, a man living off the grid, who offers them a pair of shoes. He brings them to his campsite where he tends to Martin’s injury by disinfecting and stitching his open wound. Yet, a sense of dread looms as Martin and Alma begin to lose consciousness, realizing they have been drugged. During this unconscious state, Zach captures unsettling photographs of them while dressing Martin’s arm with a mysterious symbol created from animal gut.

Upon regaining consciousness, Martin learns from Zach that the symbol he’s sporting is a mark meant to attract a presence in the woods, one believed to be the essence of an ancient sorcerer bound to a standing stone hidden in the forest. Things go from bad to worse as Martin’s foot becomes infected, prompting Zach to crudely amputate several of his toes with a hatchet.

With a newfound determination, Alma manages to snag a discarded blade and frees herself and Martin by attacking Zach. In their escape, the couple becomes separated, and Martin, faced with the horrors of the woods, stumbles upon two bodies, likely belonging to the former occupants of the abandoned camp. Eventually, he encounters the standing stone just as Olivia arrives to rescue him. Alma, fighting her own battles, finds her way back to the camp, and Zach is chased away by the intensified sounds and lights surrounding Olivia’s research area.

As dawn arrives, Olivia cauterizes Martin’s wound and elaborates on her research, revealing that Zach is her ex-husband. She explains that Zach was assisting her in communicating with the presence tied to the standing stone, guided by an ancient book of local legends, but their methods clashed, leading to a split. Tension remains high as Alma, suspecting that Zach’s influence still threatens them, pushes Martin to consider leaving. However, he is reluctant to clarify his connection to Olivia, while Alma refuses to abandon her research.

Trapped by an encroaching mist filled with fungal spores, they send Alma through the dense fog in a hazmat suit, yet the spores infiltrate her protection, subjecting her to terrifying hallucinations. That night, Zach reappears, urging them to connect with the stone through the sounds and lights, claiming they must also partake in a “sacrament,” an ominous concoction hinted at in the ancient text. With uncertainty hanging in the air, Martin hesitantly consumes the sacrament and awaits its effects.

Zach then ambushes Alma, setting the stage for a horrific sacrifice. As she fights back to reach the camp, she discovers Olivia surrounded by manipulated photos of the victims. In a desperate struggle, Alma manages to fend off Olivia and, in the chaos, kills Zach. Following the intense confrontation, she pursues Olivia back to the standing stone, but the mist engulfs the camp, subjecting them to even more vivid hallucinations.

By morning, both Alma and Olivia awaken far removed from the stone, free from their trancelike states. Overwhelmed by the surreal turn of events, Olivia collapses, astonished. Alma then approaches Martin, who is regaining consciousness by the stone, and in a hauntingly distorted voice, offers her assistance in guiding him out of the woods.
