Who is the main character of the film?
After dismantling a human trafficking ring, former military investigator turned vigilante drifter Jack Reacher finds himself back at his military headquarters to rendezvous with Major Susan Turner. However, he soon discovers from Colonel Sam Morgan that Turner is facing charges of espionage and has been detained. Turner’s attorney, Colonel Bob Moorcroft, reveals troubling evidence linking her to the murders of two soldiers in Afghanistan, yet Reacher senses a devious plot to frame her.
Complicating the situation, Moorcroft informs Reacher about an old acquaintance, Candice Dayton, who has filed a paternity suit, claiming that he is the biological father of her 15-year-old daughter, Samantha. Attempting to reach out, Reacher faces rejection from Samantha, who believes he has ulterior motives related to her mother’s past as a prostitute.
Tragedy strikes when Moorcroft is murdered by an unknown assailant, and Reacher is wrongly accused and arrested, transported to the very prison where Turner is held. As time is running out, he manages to intervene during an assassination attempt on Turner, successfully rescuing her. The two make their escape to Morgan’s residence to uncover the conspiracy behind the events, deducing his involvement. Shortly after their departure, Morgan falls victim to the assassin, who frames Reacher for his death.
The duo discovers troubling evidence that suggests Samantha is in great danger, prompting them to race to her home only to find her foster parents dead, with Samantha hiding in fear. Realizing the gravity of the situation, they decide to take her to Turner’s former private school for her safety. However, they soon find out that Samantha possesses a mobile phone, leading them to believe their enemies are tracking their every move. Discarding the phone, they hastily escape, with Samantha swiping a backpack full of essentials during their exit.
Their journey takes them to New Orleans, where they seek Daniel Prudhomme, the lone eyewitness to the murders linked to Turner. In a dilapidated warehouse, they uncover Prudhomme’s connection to a shadowy private military organization named Parasource. Unfortunately, their plan to bring Prudhomme to safety is thwarted when they are ambushed by assassins, resulting in Prudhomme’s death. Reacher manages to rescue Captain Anthony Espin after discovering the attackers are Parasource contractors, all while being pursued by the organization’s CEO, General James Harkness.
As Reacher, Turner, and Espin execute a plan to intercept a shipment of weapons, they confront Harkness and expose his corruption. What they initially perceive as weapons turns out to be opium-filled crates, revealing Harkness’s role in framing Turner for the soldiers’ murders due to her investigation of his underground dealings. With evidence now in hand, Espin and his team are able to arrest Harkness, ultimately clearing the names of Reacher and Turner.
In a gripping showdown, Reacher and Turner battle the enforcer while Samantha is captured but manages to escape. The tension peaks as Reacher faces off against the enforcer, defeating him in a fierce fight and revealing to Samantha that he might be her father. Following Harkness’s arrest, Turner is reinstated and welcomed back to her office, while Reacher vows to maintain contact.
In a poignant conclusion, Reacher meets Samantha at a diner to finally meet her mother, Candice. However, when Samantha reveals that the waitress serving them is Candice, it becomes clear that Reacher and Candice do not recognize one another, leaving Reacher to reluctantly part ways with Samantha. As he prepares to leave, he discovers that Samantha had slipped her phone into his pocket for a last goodbye. A smile crosses his face as he sets off, catching a ride to the nearest town.
