As chaos ignites in Java, Indonesia, in the wake of a devastating suicide bombing at a gathering, the life of Sultana (portrayed by Atiqah Hasiholan), the daughter of the Javanese Sultan, dangles precariously. Amid this turmoil, American Jake Travers (Kellan Lutz), who is masquerading as a Cornell University graduate student, finds himself ensnared in the chaotic aftermath and is taken into custody by Lieutenant Hashim (Ario Bayu), a seasoned investigator from Detachment 88. Initially, Hashim considers Jake merely a witness to the catastrophe; however, their encounter escalates when they are ambushed by Malik (Mickey Rourke) and his merciless henchman Achmed.
In the midst of the pandemonium, Jake’s combat skills emerge as crucial, allowing him to repel the attackers and resulting in the deaths of two terrorists. While Hashim is thankful at first, skepticism begins to cloud his judgment regarding Jake’s true intentions, leading him to suspect that there may be more to this American than he let on. As they delve deeper into the chaotic environment together, Hashim and Jake quickly find themselves at odds, straddling the divide of their identities.
A pivotal visit to the hospital sets the scene for an essential shift in their relationship. There, Hashim’s wife invites Jake to a breakfast at their home, providing a chance for personal exchange. In this cozy setting, Hashim reveals his investigation into Jake’s past, tapping into Interpol resources to unravel the truth. In a moment of vulnerability, Jake admits he is actually an FBI agent engaged in an undercover mission and suggests a collaboration between their agencies.
As Jake investigates further, a fax from his contact back home reveals a tattoo discovered on one of the bombing victims believed to belong to Sultana. This new lead prompts Jake to theorize that the deceased may not be the Sultan’s daughter but possibly a victim linked to a high-class Chinese prostitution ring.
With this fresh insight, Jake heads to a local nightclub in hopes of tracking down additional clues. His search leads him to a prostitute sporting a similar tattoo who agrees to assist him. However, their rendezvous is abruptly interrupted by a violent ambush set up by Hashim’s adversaries and the Chinese gang tied to the prostitution operation.
The ensuing gunfight captures the attention of the local police, resulting in casualties on their side as well. Amidst the chaos, Jake makes a hasty escape, only to be captured by the authorities at a later point.
Meanwhile, Hashim grapples with his own crisis when he learns that his family has been kidnapped. Malik taunts him via a phone call left at the crime scene, heightening the already mounting tension. At the police station, Hashim encounters two U.S. Marine officers engaged in discussions about Malik’s terrorist activities.
Confronted with the harsh reality of his family’s abduction, Hashim reassesses Jake’s identity. In a shocking twist, Jake discloses that he is not an FBI agent but a Marine intent on avenging the death of his brother and fellow soldiers. Armed with this new understanding, Jake proposes an alliance with Hashim to rescue his family and dismantle Malik’s terrorist network.
As clues suggest that Sultana’s disappearance may stem from a calculated kidnapping rather than a tragic death, Jake and Hashim approach the Sultan himself. However, their inquiry is met with unusual reluctance from the monarch, who evades the subject when his trusted vizier is present. Yet later, a secret message from the Sultan elucidates that Sultana was indeed abducted and that her safe return demands a hefty price—the throne he occupies. The Sultan’s growing suspicions point towards his vizier as the architect of the conspiracy, but fate takes a dramatic turn when a violent showdown ensues, leaving the Sultan severely wounded.
In the wake of this upheaval, Hashim and Jake find themselves ensnared in a high-stakes game against the vizier’s henchmen. The climax unfolds as they intercept the criminals at a bank, where Malik’s crew attempts to make off with the Sultan’s cherished jewels. Seeking refuge in a nearby spa, they are soon targeted by a call from Malik, disclosing their location.
As the intensity builds, Hashim discovers that Malik has been eavesdropping on his communications, laying the groundwork for a fierce onslaught. The chaos liberates Jake to grab one of the valuable jewels just as Hashim is confronted with the bitter reality of his family’s captivity in a van, where Malik’s mercenary, Achmed, contemplates their fate.
Malik’s cold strategy spirals into fury as he fatally stabs Achmed. In a courageous maneuver, Jake and Hashim disguise themselves as paramedics and escape in an ambulance with the injured Achmed in tow. Just before Achmed dies, he reveals the whereabouts of Hashim’s family, now held by Malik.
This sets off an urgent manhunt, with Jake and Hashim on Malik’s trail through the sacred Vesak ceremony at the ancient Borobudur temple. Their relentless pursuit culminates in the rescue of Sultana and Hashim’s family from their captor, leading to Malik’s downfall. In a final act of subterfuge, Jake covertly swaps the jewel he possesses with one retained by Malik.
As the dust settles, Jake finds himself at the airport, returning the reclaimed jewels to Sultana, whose gratitude is palpable as Hashim looks on. With his mission accomplished, Jake boards a flight bound for the United States, facing a court-martial to account for the actions taken in this fraught adventure.
