In what year does the movie Jumanji begin?
The film kicks off in 1869 within the small town of Brantford, New Hampshire, where two boys are seen breathlessly racing through the woods with a mysterious box, ultimately burying it. The scene shifts a century later, where we encounter a young Alan Parrish, chased by bullies into his father’s shoe factory. While hiding, Alan comes across Carl, one of his father’s employees, who is showcasing a prototype sneaker that he believes will revolutionize Parrish Shoes. In a moment of carelessness, Alan places the prototype on a conveyor belt, which ultimately leads to a devastating accident when it gets sucked into the machine. After a confrontation with his father, Sam Parrish, Alan finds himself targeted by bullies once more, prompting him to flee once again.
As he stumbles upon a construction site, Alan discovers the very box the boys had buried and uncovers an ancient board game named ‘Jumanji.’ That evening, Alan’s parents prepare for an event, but their conversation about sending him off to a boarding school sparks anger within Alan. He resolves to run away, only to be interrupted by a knock on the door from Sarah Whittle, the girlfriend of one of his tormentors, who returns his bike. The enchanting drumbeat from before resurfaces, pulling them toward the Jumanji game. Alan, excitedly determined to play, sets up the game despite Sarah’s reluctance. When he rolls the dice, he receives a terrifying message: > “In the jungle, you must wait, until the dice read five or eight,” and suddenly, Alan is sucked into the game, leaving Sarah to flee in terror.
Fast forward twenty-six years, we meet Nora Shepherd, who moves into the now-deserted Parrish mansion with her niece and nephew, Judy and Peter. After their parents tragically die in a skiing accident, the kids find ways to cope; Judy concocts outlandish stories while Peter retreats into silence. While exploring their new home, they stumble upon the attic and the same Jumanji board game that stole Alan’s childhood. When Judy rolls the dice, bizarre events ensue, unleashing giant mosquitoes and hordes of crazed monkeys within their home. It becomes apparent that the game must be completed to restore normalcy.
As they play, Peter and Judy are shocked to see a grown-up Alan, now decked in jungle attire, appear before them. He learns that it is 1995 and that he has been trapped in the game for decades. Engaging in an adventure filled with chaotic animal encounters and exhilarating dangers, Alan navigates through the game while trying to keep Judy and Peter safe. They soon discover Sarah, who had long believed she had witnessed a hallucination of Alan being sucked into the game.
As events escalate, the Jumanji game fills the mansion with carnivorous plants, a flood, and even a stampede of wild animals. With each turn, the stakes get higher, including an assault from the game’s villain, Van Pelt, who embodies Alan’s fears. As the group fights to overcome the game and its perils, Alan ultimately confronts his deepest fears, declaring he will no longer run from them. When he successfully rolls the dice to finish the game, everything terrifying is sucked back into it, including Van Pelt.
In a untwist of fate, Alan and Sarah find themselves back to 1969, where Alan hugs his father, mending their strained relationship. After persuading Sarah, they decide to weigh down the board game and toss it into a river, destroying its hold on their lives. The epilogue transports us back to 1995, where Alan and Sarah have married, celebrating a cheerful Christmas party at the mansion with family and friends, including Judy and Peter’s parents, blissfully unaware of their past adventures. As the scene fades, two girls wander a beach, hearing the same drumbeat echo in the distance, setting the stage for the next chapter of the Jumanji saga.
