Arthur, a once-respected British archaeologist, finds himself back in Italy after serving time in prison for stealing precious artifacts from ancient tombs. Upon his return, Arthur seeks refuge at the family home of his ex-girlfriend, Flora, where he unexpectedly meets Italia, Flora’s live-in maid and her student. The shadow of his past looms large as Beniamina, his former love, has gone missing under mysterious circumstances, yet Flora remains steadfast in her belief that she will return one day.

Struggling to fit in, Arthur faces the hostile behavior of Beniamina’s sisters, who are increasingly frustrated by his presence and accused of taking advantage of their mother’s kindness. They attempt to find him employment, but he stubbornly refuses, still haunted by the aftereffects of his imprisonment. Even as Arthur feigns illness to plan a night raid for valuable Etruscan grave goods, he finds a burgeoning connection with Italia that adds complexity to his already tumultuous life.

One fateful evening, amidst the backdrop of a beach dance, Arthur, entwined in his emotions, confesses his growing affection for Italia.
