In the midst of Zurich's esteemed medical school, a sense of unease settles over the sterile corridors as the dean is summoned to investigate a distressing occurrence in one of the labs. Upon arrival, accompanied by a policeman and nurse, he finds Professor Gruber writhing in agony, his skin transformed into a deep purple hue, with med student Herbert West standing by his side. As the professor's eyes bulge to an unsettling extent before finally bursting forth, showering blood everywhere, the stricken man succumbs to death. The dean queries West about any involvement in Gruber's demise, only to receive the enigmatic reply, "No, I gave him life!" This bizarre scene serves as a precursor to the dark and twisted events that unfold.

West arrives at Miskatonic University in New England, eager to further his studies and expand upon his groundbreaking research. He secures lodgings with medical student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott), transforming the basement into his own personal laboratory. An instant antipathy develops between West and faculty member Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale), who is accused of stealing the theory of brain death from West's late mentor, Dr. Gruber. Hill vows to ensure that West will never pass in his class.

Dan, meanwhile, has been carrying on a clandestine love affair with Barbara, the daughter of Miskatonic's medical school dean, Dr. Halsey. The couple is well aware that if their relationship were discovered by her father, Dan would be at risk of expulsion. As West becomes increasingly entrenched in his research, he enlists Dan as his partner, determined to defy mortality.

Dan's fiancée, Megan, remains skeptical of West, especially after discovering Rufus, West's reanimated cat, in a state of gruesome dismemberment. Hill, however, seizes the opportunity to turn Dr. Halsey against both West and Dan, ultimately leading to their exclusion from the school. Undeterred, West and Dan decide to sneak into the morgue, intent on testing their reagent on a human subject in an attempt to salvage their medical careers.

Their experiment goes awry as the corpse revives, unleashing a rampage of destruction upon the duo. The dean, Dr. Halsey, stumbles upon the chaos and, despite West and Dan's desperate attempts to save him, meets a gruesome end at the hands of the reanimated cadaver. Unfazed by the violence, West dispatches the zombie-like corpse with a bone saw, then injects Dr. Halsey with the reagent. The dean returns to life in a state of undead animation, his mind forever changed by the experience.

Here's a rephrased version of the section:

As Hill delves into West's research, he seizes control over Halsey and confines him to a padded cell adjacent to his office, where he can keep a watchful eye on his captive. Meanwhile, Dan and Megan infiltrate Hill's office, uncovering a disturbing trail of evidence that reveals Hill's all-consuming obsession with Megan and his callous treatment of her father. In a bold move, Hill confronts West in his underground laboratory, attempting to strong-arm him into continuing his research under the threat of exposing West's dark secrets. However, while Hill is distracted by their heated exchange, West seizes the opportunity to strike back, brutally killing Hill with a shovel and then reanimating both his head and body.

As Hill's undead form begins to stir, West subjects it to a series of gruesome experiments, questioning the reanimated corpse about its thoughts and feelings. But just as West is taking notes, Hill's body suddenly comes to life, snatching up West's reagent and fleeing back to his office. Using his newfound mind control over Halsey, Hill dispatches the hulking giant to abduct Megan from Dan.

Dan and West soon find themselves hot on Halsey's trail, tracking him down to a morgue where they stumble upon a shocking scene: Hill's body holding his reanimated head in an unnatural position above a restrained Megan. As West distracts Hill, Dan seizes the opportunity to free Megan, but not before Hill reveals that he has been secretly animating and lobotomizing corpses from the morgue to do his bidding.

In the ensuing chaos, Halsey is torn limb from limb by the reanimated corpses after he destroys Hill's head, while West injects what he believes is a lethal dose of reagent into Hill's body. However, instead of succumbing to the treatment, Hill's body undergoes a grotesque transformation, attacking West with primal ferocity. As Dan struggles to save his friend, one of the reanimated corpses attacks and kills Megan, sending him into despair.

In desperation, Dan rushes Megan's lifeless form to the emergency room, where he attempts in vain to revive her. When these efforts fail, he resorts to injecting her with West's reagent, hoping against hope that it might bring her back to life. As the scene fades to black, Megan's anguished scream suggests that her reanimation has taken a horrific turn, leaving Dan and the audience with a sense of dread and uncertainty.
