In the midst of a comfortable domestic life with his wife Kate (an archaeologist) and their daughter in New York City, U.S. Marine Corps Captain Brad Paxton remains haunted by the dark memories of his service in Syria. When Kate travels to Morocco for an archaeological expedition, she finds herself entwined in a complex web of intrigue alongside French-Algerian archaeologist Jean Rashidi. As they venture into the desert to uncover the secrets of an ancient city, their journey takes an unexpected turn as they inadvertently cross the border into Algeria, where local insurgents kidnap Kate, Jean, and Moroccan Amir Jadid. The latter's subsequent release only serves to heighten the sense of unease.

Meanwhile, Brad receives news of Kate's disappearance and rushes to Rabat, Morocco, where he meets Younes Laalej, a Cabinet member with ties to the U.S. Army, with whom Brad shares a shared history. Together, they assemble an unlikely team comprising U.S. Ambassador Williams and Tom Fitzgerald, who must navigate the treacherous landscape of Moroccan politics to gather intelligence on the situation. Their efforts are further complicated by the revelation that terrorist leader Jaafar El Hadi, wanted by Interpol for his crimes, is hiding in plain sight.

As tensions escalate, Kate finds herself at the mercy of her captors, who demand a $10 million ransom or threaten to take her life. The clock ticks down as Brad and Younes embark on a perilous journey to track down El Hadi's compound in Abadla, Morocco. With the assistance of a counter-terrorism agency, they manage to pinpoint the location, only to find themselves facing off against a formidable enemy.

As night falls, Brad and Younes launch a daring assault on the compound, taking out most of the terrorists and finding Kate hiding in the shadows. However, their triumph is short-lived, as El Hadi orders the execution of Jean, a poignant reminder that time is running out. The stakes are raised even higher when El Hadi forces Younes to orchestrate the transfer of the ransom money into his offshore account.

In the climactic final act, Brad and Younes confront El Hadi, who attempts to escape as U.S. Navy SEALs arrive on the scene, cutting down the terrorist leader and his remaining followers. As the dust settles, Brad and Younes, presumed dead by their rescuers, are left to recover from their ordeal, while Kate is finally freed, forever changed by her harrowing experience in the desert.

As the sun rises over the Algeria-Morocco border, Brad is reunited with Kate, marking a new chapter in their tumultuous journey. Meanwhile, Jadid encounters Fitz, who lauds his bravery and confers upon him an unexpected gift: American citizenship and a coveted role as a CIA asset. However, fate has other plans, and Jadid's brief moment of triumph is cut short by a brutal assassination, revealing the true nature of Fitz's character. It transpires that he is a ruthless lobbyist for a powerful oil company, which secretly finances the very terrorist networks they claim to combat. As Fitz and his cohorts exit the scene, Younes, ever vigilant, observes their duplicitous behavior and dispatches a cryptic text to Brad, alerting him to the corruption that lurks beneath the surface.
