As Kate (Tina Fey) tends to Phil's (Chris Parnell) brow-beaten brows, her own life is a tangled mess. Her daughter Haley (Madison Davenport) pays a visit, only to be appalled by her mother's state of disarray and subsequently decides to spend the night elsewhere with a friend. Kate's downward spiral continues as she heads to Florida to reunite with sister Maura, seeking solace in their shared struggles.

Upon returning home, the sisters are met with an unwelcome surprise: the "sold" sign staring back at them like a cruel taunt. Kate's tantrum on the front lawn is a cathartic release of pent-up frustration, while Maura remains stoic, oblivious to the fact that their parents have already sold their childhood home.

As they're tasked by their parents, Bucky and Deanna, to clear out their old bedroom for the new owners, Kate and Maura are forced to confront the ghosts of their past. A journey through their diaries serves as a poignant reminder of missed opportunities and unfulfilled dreams. Kate's suggestion to throw a party in their old bedroom sparks an idea in Maura's mind, and though initially hesitant, her sister eventually comes around to the notion.

As they begin to plan this impromptu celebration, Kate's desire to create one last hurrah for Maura takes on a new significance. With their parents' departure leaving only memories of their once-cherished childhood home, Kate and Maura must confront the reality that their carefree days are behind them. Yet, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, they find solace in each other's company, determined to make this final stand count.

As Maura and Kate embark on their mission to host one final, unforgettable bash, they delve into their alma mater's social hierarchy, carefully curating a guest list that excludes none other than Kate's arch-nemesis, Brinda (Maya Rudolph), and an awkward classmate, Alex (Bobby Moynihan), whose attempts at humor fall flat. The sisters' quest for party perfection takes them to the local supermarket, where they inadvertently cross paths with Brinda, her expression a picture of disappointment and indignation over not receiving an invitation.

Their attention soon turns to the new inhabitants of their childhood home, the Geernts (Santino Fontana and Britt Lower), with whom they engage in a lively game of verbal sparring, poking fun at their eccentricities and outlandish decorating choices. In preparation for the big night, Maura and Kate treat themselves to salon pampering, inviting Vicky, aka Hae-Woo (Greta Lee), and her friends to join them. As they sit under the stylist's skilled hands, Maura becomes struck by a "hiring now" sign, prompting her to coax Kate into inquiring about job opportunities at the salon.

A visit to the manager yields an unexpected result, with Kate emerging from the meeting looking like she'd landed a new role, much to Maura's amusement. With one last task to complete before the party, the sisters must navigate the delicate situation of canceling dinner plans with their parents. A trip to their retirement resort reveals an unexpected development - their parents in the midst of a, ahem, romantic interlude, leaving everyone in attendance shocked and mortified.

As night begins to fall, Maura and Kate transform their childhood home into a vibrant party space, with old classmates like Alex (Bobby Moynihan) arriving to mingle. However, the atmosphere remains subdued, with guests struggling to let loose. The tide turns when a group of lesbians arrives with their own DJ, injecting the party with an infectious energy. Meanwhile, Brinda and her friends remain glued to the TV, engrossed in a marathon viewing session of "Game of Thrones," while their companions yearn to join the festivities.

As the night wears on, Brinda's attempts to re-enter the party are met with firm resistance from Kate, who has already taken steps to ensure a more exclusive and refined atmosphere. Meanwhile, Hae-Woo and her friends bring an injection of youthful vitality to the gathering, their revealing outfits and exuberant energy a jarring contrast to the older couples that populate the scene.

Dave's connection to the world of drugs is revealed as Pazuzu (John Cena), his dealer, arrives with a veritable arsenal of substances at his disposal. Kate and Maura take advantage of this bounty, purchasing joints and cocaine before hiding their purchases away for later use. However, Alex's decision to immerse himself in the role of Tony Montana from "Scarface" proves disastrous, as he consumes an entire bag of cocaine in one fell swoop.

The aftermath of Alex's binge is marked by chaos and destruction, as he wreaks havoc throughout the house. Amidst this turmoil, Maura finds solace in a joint shared with James in the attic, where they open up to each other about their deepest fears and insecurities. James has recently shed pounds in an effort to boost his self-confidence, while Maura struggles with feelings of boredom.

The tender moment is disrupted when Maura's dance routine sends her tumbling through the attic floor, leaving her partially stuck. James rescues her, but the damage has already been done - the floor begins to shake ominously beneath their feet. They make a hasty exit, only to find themselves falling through the ceiling of Maura's bedroom, covered in dust and debris.

Despite this inauspicious start, James attempts to put things right by fixing the ceiling, but his efforts are foiled when Maura accidentally sets off sparks from a Garfield candle. The resulting panic leads her to drop the candle on James's lap, causing him to slip on the lubricant Kate had earlier used and fall onto a stuck ballerina music box. Maura's subsequent attempts to free it only serve to further entrench the problem, leaving James frustrated and in pain as he beats a hasty retreat.

As Brinda persistently attempts to infiltrate the party, Kate is compelled to confront her about her aversion towards Brinda. This confrontation sparks a heated exchange, with Brinda labeling Kate a hothead, prompting the latter's explosive reaction. Seizing the opportunity, Brinda captures Kate's chaotic state on camera and shares it on social media. Shortly after, Kate receives a call from Haley, who is spending time with her grandparents. Upon seeing the incriminating photo of Kate at the party, Haley becomes convinced that their mother has not undergone any significant changes. Fueled by frustration, Haley dubs Kate a loser, prompting Kate to abandon her maternal role and resort to excessive drinking. In an attempt to satiate her cravings, Kate ventures out to replenish her supplies, mistakenly grabbing Maura's bag in the process and scrutinizing her phone for messages. A startling revelation awaits Kate as she discovers that Haley has been residing with none other than their sister, Maura.

As the sisters' deceptions come to light, they face off outside their parents' residence. Kate's carelessness results in her leaving the car running, causing the sister tree to topple over and crush a portion of the house. The sisters' tussle is interrupted by the arrival of Haley, who is accompanied by their parents. Witnessing the chaos, Haley becomes incensed but ultimately succumbs to gravity, tumbling into the newly formed sinkhole and plummeting into the pool. Kate follows suit, plunging herself into the murky waters in an effort to rescue her sister. The siblings are eventually extricated from the depths, where they confront the consequences of their actions.

Under the watchful eyes of their parents, Kate and Maura are forced to confront the gravity of their mistakes. Kate confesses to never having secured employment, but a tentative truce is established with Haley. Bucky and Deanna impose a collective punishment on the sisters, compelling them to clean up the ravaged house. Over the subsequent fortnight, Kate and Maura endeavor to make amends by repairing the damage and enlisting the assistance of their friends. As the weeks pass, Brinda, having reconciled with Kate, lends her support in the successful sale of the property to Alex and his new girlfriend, Hae-Woo.

As the dust settles, Kate urges Maura to pursue James, who has unknowingly become infatuated with her sister. Maura seizes the opportunity, lying face-down in James' pool as she calls for assistance. The moment is sealed with a tender kiss.

Four months later, Christmas arrives, and the sisters reunite at their parents' residence, accompanied by James and Haley. Kate and Maura share a heartfelt hug before launching into an endearingly awkward dance routine, a testament to their hard-won reconciliation.
