In the picturesque coastal town of Bexhill-on-Sea, where the soft waves of the English Channel caress the sandy beach, a dark and sinister plan is quietly unfolding. At the heart of this intrigue lies the Augusta-Victoria College, an elite finishing school catering to the daughters of the Nazi hierarchy, and shrouded in a veil of secrecy as a calculated risk for the British government. Wheatley, a sly English teacher and undercover operative, faces a precarious situation as his cover gets compromised. His hurried escape to town without notifying his superior, Colonel Smith, puts him in grave danger.
In an unexpected turn, seasoned operative Captain Thomas Miller, who possesses a unique blend of German background and linguistic finesse, is sent in to replace Wheatley. The investigation takes a gruesome twist when Miller discovers Wheatley’s lifeless body washed ashore, a sight witnessed by the unsuspecting schoolgirls. As he digs deeper into Wheatley’s mysterious death, whispers of a plot to smuggle the students back to Germany reach his ears, prompting him to rush back to town and warn Smith of the growing threat.
However, lurking in the shadows is Ilse Keller, a former student and now a fiercely capable PT instructor, determined to keep her own dangerous secrets hidden. With her sharpshooting skills, she not only eliminates Smith but cunningly sets up Miller to bear the blame. With everything he holds dear disappearing and his life hanging by a thread, Miller is forced into hiding. Adopting a stolen uniform, he attempts to blend in at a parade, frantically evading those who seek to capture him.
His situation worsens when he is apprehended and thrown into a jail cell, coming face to face with Captain Drey and Corporal Willis, who are far from trustworthy despite claiming to be government agents. In a moment of desperation, Miller reveals his real identity and presents vital proof—microfilm containing Keller’s list of British spies in Germany. Yet, he soon discovers that those who were supposed to assist him may have ulterior motives.
Drey’s betrayal shocks Miller to his core, as he learns Drey is a Nazi sympathizer. With his world collapsing, he must make a harrowing escape. Just when all hope seems lost, Charlie, a local bus driver with a heart of gold, becomes Miller’s unlikely ally. By freeing him from his restraints, Charlie offers Miller a moment to regain his strength and strategize his next move.
As Drey and Willis close in, Miller’s frantic attempts to reestablish communication with his superiors take him to the brink. In a nail-biting sequence, he manages to relay the critical code phrase “Six Minutes to Midnight,” a lifeline as Drey’s treachery is revealed, leading to an explosive clash that leaves only one operative standing.
When Miller returns to the college, he is greeted by a chilling silence, starkly contrasting the usual vibrancy of life as he confronts Headmistress Miss Rocholl. The absence of the students raises alarm bells, quickly leading to the realization that Keller has orchestrated a rescue mission, manipulating the girls like pawns. Their ultimate destination—a windswept cliffside—sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown against the backdrop of a setting sun.
As the Luftwaffe Junkers Ju 52 aircraft rumbles into view, the students, bathed in the dying light, ignite flares, signaling their call to the skies. Just as it seems the fugitives are about to succeed, an RAF Spitfire intervenes, forcing the German aircraft to retreat. In the ensuing chaos, Miller, Rocholl, and the rebellious student Gretel unite, confronting Keller, who is poised to take lethal action. With calm resolve, they implore her to reconsider, ultimately persuading her to relent and spare Gretel’s life.
In the weeks that follow, amid the upheaval caused by Germany’s invasion of Poland, Miller visits Rocholl at the school, assuring her that the girls will remain under her protection as they navigate the turmoil ahead. As he departs, the young women gift him a stirring rendition of “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary,” their voices rising into the evening sky. However, their fleeting moment of joy is soon overshadowed when the radio announces the grave news: Britain is now at war with Germany, marking the beginning of a pivotal and tragic chapter in their lives.
