Plot Summary

As Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) stands poised on the precipice of proposing to Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), who has recently soared to stardom with her Broadway debut, a seemingly innocuous meteorite crashes nearby, setting off a chain reaction that will forever alter their lives. Unbeknownst to Peter, an extraterrestrial Symbiote attaches itself to his moped, while in a desperate bid for freedom, escaped convict Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church) falls into a particle accelerator, merging with the surrounding sand and imbuing him with the power of shape-shifting. The resulting Sandman wreaks havoc on the city.

Meanwhile, Harry Osborn’s (James Franco) festering vendetta against Peter reaches a boiling point as he unleashes his newfound arsenal of Green Goblin-inspired gadgets in a brutal attack. However, during the scuffle, Harry suffers a concussion and succumbs to partial amnesia, erasing his memories of his father’s death and Spider-Man’s true identity.

As the city celebrates its beloved web-slinger for saving Gwen Stacy’s (Bryce Dallas Howard) life, Sandman launches a brazen heist on an armored car, effortlessly overpowering Spider-Man. The revelation that Flint Marko was actually Ben Parker’s killer, not Dennis Carradine (Michael Papajohn), sets Peter ablaze with vengeance.

As the Symbiote bonds with his costume during a restless night, Peter awakens to find himself suspended high above Manhattan in a state of transformation. Not only has his suit undergone a radical makeover, but his powers have been amplified, and he’s now driven by an insatiable hunger for justice. The symbiotic black suit awakens the darker aspects of Peter’s personality, fueling a sense of self-importance and recklessness.

With this new persona, Spider-Man stalks Marko to the depths of an underground subway tunnel, where he unleashes a brutal battle that culminates in a desperate bid to dissolve his foe using water. The Sandman is reduced to mere mud, but at what cost? Peter’s newfound arrogance has driven away Mary Jane, whose struggling career and personal life are now tangled in a web of deceit.

As the rift between them grows, Mary Jane finds solace with Harry, who is gradually regaining his memories. An apparition of his father urges him to take matters into his own hands, leading him to manipulate Mary Jane into ending her relationship with Peter. The final blow comes when she announces her love for another man, only for Harry to reveal himself as that other guy, setting the stage for a heart-wrenching confrontation at the Osborn mansion.

As Peter dons the black suit, he unleashes a fierce battle that culminates in Harry’s disfigured visage, courtesy of an explosion spawned from one of his own pumpkin bombs. The influence of the suit becomes apparent as Peter publicly exposes and humiliates Eddie Brock (), a rival freelance photographer who had recently achieved overnight fame at the Daily Bugle by submitting doctored photographs from Marko’s heists that supposedly outed Spider-Man as a criminal; enraged by having to print a retraction, J. Jonah Jameson () fires Eddie in a fit of rage. Peter’s transformation takes hold as he alters his appearance and begins to comport himself with an air of arrogance.

Meanwhile, the Sandman recovers from the brutal beating he sustained at Spider-Man’s hands, having miraculously survived the ordeal. In a misguided attempt to stir up jealousy, Peter invites Gwen to the nightclub where Mary Jane works, hoping to get a rise out of her. However, Gwen is not oblivious to Peter’s ploy and storms out, leaving him to confront Mary Jane. As their altercation escalates, Peter finds himself at odds with the club’s bouncers and accidentally strikes Mary Jane, sending her crashing to the floor. The realization dawns on Peter that the Symbiote is warping his personality for the worse. He abandons the nightclub and makes a beeline for a nearby church bell tower, intent on ridding himself of the alien’s influence.

Initially, he struggles to remove the suit, but it eventually weakens in response to the cacophony of sounds emanating from the bell, allowing Peter to finally break free. Unbeknownst to him, Eddie Brock just happens to be at the church, praying for Peter’s demise when the Symbiote falls from the tower and takes possession of his body. Now reconstituted as Venom, Eddie chances upon the Sandman and proposes an unholy alliance to destroy Spider-Man, a proposition that the Sandman eagerly accepts.

As the sinister duo abducts Mary Jane, they suspend her in a precarious web above a sprawling construction site, blanketed by an endless sea of sand. In a desperate bid for assistance, Peter approaches Harry (Tom Holland), but his request is met with rejection. However, Harry’s discovery of the truth about his father’s demise from his stalwart butler Bernard sets him on a path to redemption, arriving just in time to join forces with Peter against their formidable foes. As the battle rages on, Harry momentarily subdues the gargantuan manifestation of the Sandman, while Venom attempts to impale Peter with Harry’s glider. However, Harry instinctively jumps into harm’s way, sacrificing his own life to save his friend, mirroring the tragic fate that befell his father.

Meanwhile, as the fight against Venom intensifies, Peter seizes upon an opportunity to exploit the symbiote’s vulnerabilities by creating a sonic barrier using the construction site’s pipes. The Symbiote succumbs to the relentless assault of vibrations, releasing its hold on Eddie Brock (Rhett Reid). As the alien struggles in agony, Peter skillfully ensnares him with webbing and throws one of Harry’s pumpkin bombs at the creature. However, Eddie, driven by a primal urge to reconnect with the Symbiote, leaps into the fray, only to meet his untimely demise along with Brock.

In the aftermath of the brutal conflict, Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church) begins to stir, revealing that he had no intention of killing Ben Parker but rather accidentally took his life in a desperate bid to save his daughter’s. Peter, moved by this revelation, offers forgiveness, and Marko dissipates into nothingness. As Harry’s funeral procession concludes, Peter finds solace in the company of Mary Jane (Zendaya) as they begin to reconcile their relationship.

In a poignant moment, Peter attends Harry’s graveside service alongside Aunt May, Bernard, and the Stacys. Days later, he strolls into the jazz club where Mary Jane is enchanting the audience with her sultry vocals. As they embrace and begin to sway to the music, it becomes clear that their bond has been rekindled, paving the way for a brighter future.
