Fifteen years after departing Beacon Hills, Scott McCall now operates an animal shelter in Los Angeles, which is connected to Dr. Alan Deaton’s new clinic, and he finds himself single. Meanwhile, Lydia Martin has taken a position at an energy company in San Francisco, following a breakup with Stiles due to a haunting vision of his demise. Derek Hale is a father to a 15-year-old son named Eli and manages an auto repair shop alongside Malia Tate and Peter Hale. Mason has enlisted in the Beacon Hills police force, while Liam Dunbar resides in Japan, working at a restaurant with Hikari Zhang, a kitsune, where they safeguard the urn containing the Nogitsune.
Tension escalates when a hooded figure attacks the restaurant, freeing the Nogitsune, and subsequently sets multiple fires in the Beacon Hills forest. Amidst this chaos, Scott, Lydia, and Chris Argent receive visions of Allison Argent, who tragically fell to the Oni. They surmise that her spirit remains in the bardo, unable to pass on until a special ritual is performed. Thus, they return to Beacon Hills with Jackson Whittemore to perform the ritual at the Nemeton, resulting in the unexpected resurrection of Allison. Awakening with no memories, she fails to recognize Scott, holding only vague recollections of her family’s rivalries with Derek. Overwhelmed, she attacks Scott and escapes the hospital.
Deaton eventually discovers that the Nogitsune has been manipulating Chris and engineering the visions of Allison to deceive Scott’s pack into resurrecting her. Utilizing the Nemeton’s power, the Nogitsune manifests and spawns nine Oni, deceitfully confronting Allison and spreading lies about Scott’s role in her family’s downfall. Driven by rage, she turns against Derek, hunting Scott and Eli. In a desperate gamble, Scott permits her to stab him with a dagger coated in wolfsbane, intending to use himself as bait for the rest of his pack. In a breakthrough, he prompts fragmented memories to resurface for Allison, leading her to reluctantly forge an alliance with him against the Nogitsune.
As the Nogitsune captures Liam, Hikari, Derek, Eli, Noah, Mason, and Deaton, they are ensnared in an illusionary bardo. Lydia and Jackson investigate the forest fires and conclude that rowan trees were burned to create mountain ash. They uncover that Adrian Harris has been lurking in secrecy since his so-called demise, harboring a vendetta against Scott’s pack for his grievances. Harris encircles the stadium with mountain ash, compelling Lydia to witness her friends’ despair so the Nogitsune can thrive on her agony. In a twist of fate, Lydia’s banshee scream triggers a flood of memories for Allison.
Scott ingeniously negotiates the release of the captured friends by convincing the Nogitsune to allow them to escape if Allison kills him. Reluctantly, Allison fires the shot, but Hikari, acting on instinct, protects Scott with her kitsune spirit. As Deputy Parrish breaks through the mountain ash barrier, he, Chris, Melissa McCall, and the others unite in bardo with the rest of the pack. Together, they eliminate the Oni, while Scott, Derek, and Eli overpower the Nogitsune. In a climactic confrontation, Derek holds the creature steady until Parrish incinerates both in a blaze of sacrifice, transforming Derek, in his final moments, into a true Alpha. The story ends with Allison and Scott rekindling their relationship amidst the emotional toll of their recent tribulations.
At Derek’s funeral, Noah entrusts the ownership of Stiles’ Jeep to Eli, and Scott, feeling a sense of belonging, decides to adopt Eli. Parrish ensures Harris is committed to Eichen House, sealing the fate of those who sought vengeance.
