Plot Summary

In the vibrant cityscape of 1976 San Francisco, a budding artist named Minnie (15) embarks on a sonic journey, capturing her innermost thoughts and emotions in an audio diary. As she navigates the complexities of adolescence, she finds herself increasingly consumed by the thrill of awakening sexuality. Despite harboring self-doubt about her physical appearance, Minnie attracts attention from boys at school, leaving her torn between desire for validation and a growing sense of independence.

When her free-spirited mother Charlotte is too preoccupied to spend time with her boyfriend Monroe, she suggests he take Minnie out instead. At a local bar, the unlikely pair connects over their shared fascination with art and music. As they flirt and bond, Minnie finds herself opening up about her desires, confessing to wanting to lose her virginity. Monroe, taken by Minnie’s candor, begins to tutor her in the art of intimacy, and they start meeting at his apartment for clandestine trysts.

As Minnie shares tales of her sexual exploits with her closest friend Kimmie, she also finds solace in creative expression. A chance encounter with renowned cartoonist Aline Kominsky sparks a newfound passion within Minnie, who begins crafting comics that reflect her own experiences and emotions.

However, not all relationships are as harmonious as those between Minnie and Monroe. Her encounters with schoolmate Ricky leave her feeling unfulfilled and uneasy, while a night of provocative role-playing with Kimmie at the local bar takes an unexpected turn. As tensions rise within her family, Minnie’s mother Charlotte loses her job as a librarian, leaving the household in disarray.

Amidst the chaos, Minnie finds herself torn between the comfort of her familiar surroundings and the allure of new experiences. Her stepfather Pascal’s distant offers to relocate her to New York City only serve to further complicate her decision-making process. Meanwhile, her relationships with Charlotte and Monroe become increasingly strained, culminating in a dramatic confrontation that sends Minnie running for cover.

As she begins anew, Minnie finds solace in the creative process once more, pouring her emotions into art and connecting with like-minded individuals on the beach. A serendipitous encounter with Aline Kominsky rekindles her passion for storytelling through comics, setting the stage for a journey of self-discovery that will take her to new depths and uncharted territories.
