Plot Summary

April Epner (39), a devout Brooklyn elementary school teacher, finds herself on an unpredictable journey of self-discovery and turmoil after a series of life-altering events unfold without warning. Her husband Ben’s sudden departure leaves her reeling, followed by the unexpected passing of her abrasive adoptive mother Trudy just the next day. Amidst this chaos, April receives a shocking phone call from Alan, representative of Bernice Graves (flamboyant host of a local talk show), who reveals herself as April’s biological mother.

Initially, April is both intrigued and resistant to Bernice’s claims that she was fathered by Steve McQueen. Meanwhile, she begins to form a connection with Frank, the divorced father of one of her students, through lengthy phone conversations. As their relationship blossoms, they share a memorable first date at a party hosted by Bernice at her apartment.

However, April’s life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers she is pregnant - the result of a fleeting encounter with Ben on the kitchen floor just before he left her. Overjoyed at the prospect of motherhood, which has long been her greatest desire, April is subsequently bewildered and upset by Ben’s sudden return, Frank’s hasty departure after learning about their “quickie” at the gynecologist, and Bernice’s persistent efforts to forge a bond between them.

Complicating matters further is the revelation that Bernice initially presented as having placed her up for adoption only three days after birth, when in reality she had done so a full year later at the urging of her parents. April’s world begins to unravel as she struggles to reconcile these betrayals not just from those she trusted but also from the God she worships.

As April navigates this emotional turmoil, she ultimately finds solace in her deep-rooted faith and must learn to forgive those who have wronged her - including Bernice, whom she eventually reconciles with on the condition that Bernice “buy” a baby for her. Frank, too, forgives April when she apologizes for her behavior.

However, this journey of redemption is not without its setbacks. When April miscarries the baby Bernice had purchased for her, she turns to adoption and ultimately finds a new sense of purpose as a mother to another child.
