What does Clarence Worley do for a living?

Plot Summary

In this pivotal moment, Comic book store clerk and film aficionado Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) embarks on a cinematic celebration of his birthday by watching a Sonny Chiba triple feature at a Detroit movie theater. It is here that he meets the captivating Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette), a beautiful young woman whose presence in his life will have far-reaching consequences. As their connection deepens, they share a tender moment, and Clarence’s world is forever altered.

The next day, they take a bold step and exchange vows in a whirlwind romance. However, their happiness is short-lived, as Alabama’s volatile pimp, Drexl Spivey (Gary Oldman), casts a shadow over their relationship. Clarence’s idol, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley (Val Kilmer), appears to him in an otherworldly vision, urging him to take drastic action against Drexl and his cohorts.

With his newfound confidence, Clarence stands up to the intimidating Drexl, refusing to back down from a confrontation that will have devastating consequences. As events unfold, Clarence finds himself at the center of a maelstrom of violence and betrayal. His actions spark a chain reaction that sets in motion a series of events that will test the limits of his courage, loyalty, and determination.

In the aftermath of Drexl’s demise, Clarence and Alabama discover a suitcase filled with stolen cocaine, which they quickly decide to leave behind as they set their sights on California. Before departing, they pay a visit to Clarence’s father, Clifford Worley (Dennis Hopper), a security guard and former cop who offers valuable insight into the consequences of his son’s actions.

Upon arriving in Los Angeles, the young couple seeks out Clarence’s old friend Dick Ritchie (Michael Rapaport), an aspiring actor who is part of their plan to sell the drugs and start anew. However, their lives are once again disrupted by the sudden and violent intrusion of gangster Vincenzo Coccotti (Christopher Walken) and his henchmen, who seek to claim the drugs for themselves.

As the stakes continue to rise, Clarence finds himself facing a moral dilemma that will challenge everything he holds dear. With the odds stacked against him, he must rely on his wits, his courage, and his determination to survive the treacherous landscape of crime and corruption that surrounds him.

As Alabama lies alone in her hotel room, she’s suddenly confronted by Virgil (James Gandolfini), one of Coccotti’s ruthless henchmen, who unleashes a brutal beating upon her. But Alabama refuses to go down without a fight, managing to turn the tables and fatally take out her attacker. With her adrenaline still pumping from the ordeal, she confides with Clarence about their plans to escape to Cancún and start anew, armed with the spoils from their recent drug deal.

Meanwhile, L.A. detectives Nicholson (Tom Sizemore) and Dimes (Chris Penn) are hot on the trail of a massive cocaine deal, courtesy of Elliot’s unwitting confession. They convince Elliot to wear a wire in exchange for immunity, unaware that Coccotti’s goons have already learned about the deal through Floyd’s drugged-out roommate (Brad Pitt). As both parties converge on Lee Donowitz’s hotel, Clarence charms Lee with his film buff credentials, only to find themselves caught in a precarious standoff between rival gangs and law enforcement. Amidst the chaos, Elliot is exposed as an informant, earning him a scalding hot pot of coffee from the incensed Lee.

As the gunfight rages on, Dick makes a hasty retreat, abandoning his stash of drugs. Clarence exits the bathroom to find himself caught in the crossfire and takes a bullet to the eye, leaving Alabama devastated and convinced that her loved one is gone for good. With Dimes meeting his maker at her hands, the battle finally subsides, claiming the lives of Lee, Elliot, the police, gangsters, and their bodyguards.

Miraculously, Clarence survives, albeit with partial blindness. He and Alabama flee the hotel as it descends into chaos, eventually finding themselves on a sun-kissed Cancún beach, surrounded by the new life they’ve built together – including a son they’ve named Elvis.
