Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the setting where Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is striving to make his mark in the boxing world. In November 1975, he squares off against Spider Rico, securing a knockout victory and pocketing a mere $44 for his efforts. Rocky harbors feelings for the shy and reserved Adrian (Talia Shire), who struggles with her self-confidence. To make ends meet, Rocky takes on odd jobs for a local loan shark, Gazzo, who pays him $20 each time. However, Rocky’s conscience prevents him from being ruthless, and he cannot bring himself to harm those in debt.
Rocky’s life takes a turn when he is expelled from Mickey’s Gym, run by the seasoned trainer Mickey, who has chosen to rent Rocky’s locker to a promising newcomer, Dipper Brown. Meanwhile, Adrian’s brother, Paulie, stands by Rocky as his best friend. The reigning heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), is intrigued by the idea of boxing a low-profile fighter for a New Year’s Day match. Creed’s promoter, Jergens, agrees to the idea, and they select Rocky, nicknamed “The Italian Stallion,” from a list of Philadelphia fighters.
Gazzo provides Rocky with $50 to take Adrian out on a date. Initially, Adrian hesitates due to her brother’s angry outburst, but as Rocky approaches her with kindness, she agrees, and they share a kiss. Mickey becomes aware of Jergens’ offer for Rocky and is not thrilled about Rocky being reduced to a mere leg-breaker. After a meeting with Jergens, Rocky accepts the challenge, and Creed, in a TV interview, mocks him, underestimating his potential.
With Gazzo’s encouragement, Rocky receives $500 to train and makes Mickey his manager, launching into an intense training regimen. Paulie assists him by helping him punch meat bags and build strength. Adrian starts to open up and becomes closer to Rocky. In an effort to prove himself, Rocky decides to go the distance in the fight against Creed, no matter the outcome. One night before the fight, feeling the pressure, Rocky confides in Adrian about his self-doubt but resolves to stand tall against Creed’s formidable prowess.
On New Year’s Day, the highly anticipated fight unfolds with Creed showcasing grand entrances, donning costumes of both George Washington and Uncle Sam. Taking advantage of Creed’s overconfidence, Rocky surprises everyone by knocking him down in the first round – a first for the champion. As the fight progresses through fifteen grueling rounds, both fighters sustain injuries. Rocky faces severe head trauma and even requires an eyelid cut to maintain his vision. At the same time, Creed battles internal bleeding and a broken rib.
The contest brings forth an extraordinary display of resilience, with Rocky’s unwavering ability to withstand blows countering Creed’s superior technique. As the fight draws to a close, both men share a moment of mutual respect, agreeing there will be no rematch. Cheers erupt from the spectators and sportscasters alike as Jergens proclaims the fight as “the greatest exhibition of guts and stamina in the history of the ring.” In a moment filled with emotion, Rocky calls out for Adrian, who rushes to him, aided by Paulie, who distracts security. As Jergens announces Creed as the winner by split decision, Rocky and Adrian embrace, pouring out their love for one another, untouched by the outcome of the fight.
